I felt it was a terrible thing when the industry moved away from vinyl to CDs, but my measly consumer dollars weren't going to be enough to change things. There's a reasonably good chance that many of us in the 50+ bracket have lost enough hearing the the highest quality audio reproduction would be of little value. And, with the growing level of ambient noise in our daily lives.... well, just saying.

I've been disappointed so far, but am not giving up.

I attempted to create a progressive rock station by entering Yes and Pink Floyd. But it apparently has them classified as 70's Rock, as the first song played was by Grand Funk Railroad. Ick! Next was another 70's rock band. I nixed both of those.

May continue to see if I can "tune" it by entering King Crimson.

If I were you, I'd highlight the song being played. One of the options you can select besides "I like it" or "I don't like it" is "why are you playing this song."

You'll see it has to do with the actual music, not really the era. It might be something about the electric guitar or synthesizers. You might need to start from somewhere else. Or just choose one of the artists.

By the way, what exactly does "progressive rock" mean? I've heard that phrase a lot, but never understood it.

It's the part of the music cycle where rock became so complex and academic that a cultural revolution occurred and punk and roots rock began to emerge as a counterpoint.

It is sometimes also called Art Rock. The early albums from Genesis were of this type, before Phil Collins eventually ruined them and made them into a megahit pop band.

I have a goodly prog rock collection, mixed in with a goodly blues collection, and folk, and jazz, and rock, and classical, along with a very large Bob Dylan collection. I think I have somewhere around 700 CDs. But no opera and a little bit of country. Almost no "pop" either.

I attended a Yes concert in 1974, with everyone else in the party getting stoned except for me - I was the designated driver.

In 2004, I drove to Chicago to attend one of the Yes 35th Anniversary Tour concerts. What a blast. Sure brought back memories.

I had read about it but never seriously tried it until I read this thread. - Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

One thing I find I have to guard against is that I end up listening to my old favorites over and over! I like new music, but faced with a choice I seem to wind up creating similar playlists that have the same old songs! The farther away I am from the computer the better because then I end up listening to the whole song instead of skipping til I find something I know I like!

Have you ever tried GPAL?

It is somewhat similar to Pandora.
Works with itunes - type in an artist and it creates new playlists from your library.
But it also finds and allows you to add music from new artists. (For some reason these show up under my podcasts.)

I haven't used it much recently so I can't recommend anything specific, but if you are an itunes/ipod user you might want to take a look.
