OT: Eclipse

It was a beautifully clear night here for viewing the eclipse. The Lord of the Rings Eclipse, as some are calling it, as Saturn was beside the Moon throughout.

It was -4, with a windchill of -16, but I still went out and snapped some pictures and watched it for about a half-hour. Took some shots through one of the trees, that is still coated in ice. Overexposed one of them for effect. Here are three pics.

The third one is of a half-eclipsed Moon, shot through my tree. It looks almost like the Moon is inside of a massive star cluster.

Very nice pictures Tom. Much clearer than here with the high clouds preceeding rain tomorrow. What camera and lens are you suing?

It's a 3-yr old, upper-end at the time, digital point & shoot. A Sony DSC-S85 with a "Carl Zeiss" Vario-Sonnar F2.0 3X optical zoom lense. 4 megapixel, which was upper end at the time. Still quite good, the lense is more important than the megapixels, IMHO. This lens is about 3/4" across, not like many P&S cameras with those tiny lenses. I bought it because of the lens, the manual controls, and good reviews. Set me back $400+ at the time.

Used to have a decent Nikon SLR with 4 or 5 lenses, but it was stolen several years ago. Never got back to that level. But I went with this.

It has lots of manual control options. You can shoot full automatic, aperature priority, shutter priority, or full manual. I took about 40 pics, with most in Shutter priority, with a few in full manual. Had the camera on a tripod and set the exposure anywhere from 1/8th of a second to 8 seconds.

Would like to have a higher end digital SLR, but don't take enough pictures nowadays to justify it.

Great pics, Tom. I especially like the second one... beautiful and eerie at the same time.

You may be having freezing temps, but at least you have clear skies. We're getting rain so the eclipse is.... eclipsed.

We had a beautiful view of it from Seattle. Clear day today.

I was in LA this morning -- where it was raining and Seattle-y -- and then returned to a beautiful sunny day in Seattle, so I took a bike ride (with no rain gear!).

I wish I had known about this. The moon was so stunning tonight that my wife set up her camera and took some nice shots. If we had known about the eclipse, we would have stayed around for that.

Too bad you didn't log in earlier BD. At the time I posted my pics, it was just beginning to come out of the eclipse. After posting I went back out and watched for several minutes, taking more pictures. LIke this one with a thin sliver emerging, which overexposed a bit.

The clouds were beautiful. Amazing. Remarkable!

It's a good occasion to recommend the book "The Big Splat, or How Our Moon Came to Be". Fascinating reading about the early days of the Earth.

It was just coming out of totality when I came home from work. It was a beautiful clear night for a change. Watched from my window for a while. Working nights I usually miss things like this.

Cloudy here in W PA. Got a glimpse of it. Had the telescope all set up but no real show. There is always 2012.

The rainclouds cleared enough to view the event. It was very cool, esp. seeing Saturn and Regulus without a telescope.

The color was amazing -- a deep dusky red -- the whole thing looked like there was a cloud over it. I likne Tom's shots of it through the icy tree branches. Nice shots, Tom.

Nice pics. In western Mass, it was a clear night, so we got a great view. I tried to make out Saturn, first with naked eye, then with a pair of binoculars. Neither worked. So I pulled out my old cheapo telescope, not expecting anything, and voila! Saturn w/rings appeared very easily.

For those of you who may not be aware...in Tom's first picture, the "start" at about 8'oclock relative to the moon, is actually Saturn. Last night was only the second time I have been able to make out the rings. Methinks I should get a decent telescope one of these days!

Very nice pics for that level camera Tom. I am very camera challenged so I don't even try anymore. the eclipse was really beautiful here, some scattered clouds but Saturn and Regulus were both visable to us.

I am jealous. We had a great 7:01 - 7:52 prime time schedule for the event, but extremely heavy cloud cover rendered the moon invisible. This is the second time I have missed a lunar eclipse due to weather conditions.

Clear view in Central Indiana. Went outside and looked at the moon several times during the event. Primitive that I am, it frightened me.

Partly cloudy here in Beantown, but still got a pretty good view, my wife and I stood on the deck in the cold and enjoyed the show.
