I've worked as a professional writer and editor for 20 years. We have an elaborate quality control system in place, because even the best writers and editors make mistakes. I certainly make plenty of my own. But on a message board, I just don't think it's worth fussing over.

I have to admit, misspellings drive me crazy. I don't worry so much about it on message boards--though I try to get everything right in my own posts--but at work I'm a fanatic. I never use a spell-checker, but instead rely on my brain to catch the mistakes.

Of course, I got third place in the Scripps spelling contest in Nebraska when I was in the 8th grade, so it comes naturally...

Good move. A magazine I used to work for ran a big headline about the Free Public Library. Unfortunately, the "l' was left out of "Public."

Most people don't spend a lot of time composing posts for message boards and without a running spell check it is easy for errors to get by. Far more annoying to me and the abbreviators. Thy don’t wnt 2 tak the tme to spll thngs on out, u no wht I mean? Too much time spent texting on their phones.

What should one expect when our language gods don't even allow an "F" in phonics?

I admit to being a poor speller. Spell check isn't always convenient and AMD makes
the dictionary difficult to use. If my poor spelling bothers anyone all that much.......
well I'm just sorry, but it is what it is.

Perhaps more people should use browsers with built in spell checkers, such as Firefox. Of course, it wouldn't be able to detect such things as brake/break and there/their/they're, but it'd help. Firefox caught several typos of mine in this short post...but it couldn't detect that I had typed "us" instead of "use". I had to read my post and find that myself.

When I use my husband's Mac (Safari), there isn't a spell-check feature here in the forum. But when I post from work on IE, voila! There it is. And I'm the first to admit to relying on spell-checkers. But if they aren't readily available, I figure the conversation is more important than a typo.

I frequent several different forums for my various interests and this one is far and away the best when it comes to spelling. I go to a dirt bike forum for some info and all I can do is cringe. It's an editor's horror show! This new text generation has completely mutated the English beyond even our colonialism of it.

I went back to finish college (SF State) in the late 90's and was appalled at the number of remedial reading and math classes on the schedule. Can't blame this on just on texting. Why on earth were these kids allowed to even get into high school, let alone college, if they can't read and write? (Grumble, grumble)

OpenOffice writer, never post on a message board without it!
When you have it setup properly it will underline misspelled text as you type.

Firefox has a built in spelling checker which works very well. It also has lots of plug-in programs to customize it. Check out the links below for Firefox and other programs:
https://www.mozilla.com
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/
Add-ons like Noscript can be a pain while you set it up for operation but it will help protect you and is well worth the time to "teach" the program.

To solve the brake -v- break type problem there is a very handy dictionary type program that will bring up the definition of any highlighted word in almost any program. I highly recommend it:
https://wordweb.info/

BTW- Bulletin board software usually allows you to edit the title of a post for a few minutes after posting it. The amount of time allowed for edits is set by the system admin.

All of these programs are free.
