Why n+1 is a good idea

When bikes #1 and #3 are in the shop, and you've paid a non-refundable fee for a benefit ride a week away, it's nice to remember there's always another bike in the stable.

Here's today's full ride report on my blog.

I concur. I keep four at home (three operable, one long-term project for which I just got most of the remaining parts I need), plus one in the office.

I think bikes are like tattoos even though I don't have a tattoo but you just can't stop at one bike.
I have my hybrid, now my road bike & I'm already looking at a commuter bike for this fall, I'm tired of trying to use my back pack to carry cloths on the road bike.

Just so the wife doesn't know.

Sometimes N+7 seems a couple short of optimal.

Road touring, road sport, road racing, SS, rigid MTB, city, beach cruiser, tandem.
What no cyclocross and no suspended MTB? Is a 'bent in my future.

And to think that a year ago, I wondered if I would ride ONE bike - much less why anyone would want more than one. My how quickly the attitude changes.

At present I could have 11 bikes in the shop and still have a ride although I am my own (mechanic).

And there's one that is just about ready to be built up (#13).

I have to call about the n plus 13 tomorrow to see when it is getting delivered.

I have two that I ride - a touring bike and a mountain bike. I also have an old touring bike and an old mountain bike, but I don't ride them. I'd like to have one more bike - an uber-lightweight carbon fiber speedster. Unfortunately, we have two kids in college, and my wife won't let me spend a couple thousand $ on a new bike - or even an used one! Oh well, I love the bikes I have and life is good!

Blasphemy!

N+1 is perfect.

If you add more than one at a time, you can't fully appreciate the new bike.

With all this talk about N+7, N+13 etc., I think there is some misunderstanding here about what N+1 means. It is not the number of bikes you have, that is N.

N+1 is the number of bikes you need to have, where N is the number of bike you now have.

Let's say you have 1 bike. N=1. N+1=2. Add 1. Now, N=2. N+1=3. Add 1. Now, N=3...and so on.

I understand N theory.

N plus any number always equals N.

Blues Dawg = the "new Math" teacher. What I really want is N+4, as I am constantly seeking variety and instant gratification. Prudence is imposed by all other family member's dreams of new toys.

But your 13th bike, added to your present 12 is N+1. N+13 would be 25 bikes.

I want many new bikes, eventually, but adding 1 at a time is best for me. No way to appreciate and dial in more than 1 new bike at a time.

I was trying to demonstrate that N was the original number of bikes I had and sometimes it's hard to believe there was once only one or N and as time has gone by N has equalled as many as 15.

Number 13 is a 1946 Rudge Whitworth rod brake roadster and once it arrives the number of bikes I have will still really be N.

When I (we) went to school didn't N represent the Null Set? Nobody wants N+1 in "old math" terms.
