Folks, I just don't have the oomph!! for 50+ anymore

I don't know- I've been arounf BFN for almost 12 years and the preceeding forum for a couple more. I've been here on the 50+ ever since it started. I have sorrt of lost my enthusiasm - seems the folks posting are getting more smarts than I have - maybe I am in some sort of time warp??

I've heard (and sometimes answered) every question imaginable, and there are now more and more folks on the 50+ forum more knowledgeable than I. We have a bunch of racers that far outclass me, and others that have much more technical knowledge.

All I seem to care about is hopping on the bike and riding a bit. I find myself posting less and less, and almost all the folks I started with have moved on.

Well, just thought I would whine a bit.

Just tried out some new tires and I really like them - Vittoria 700x25 60tpi with Kevlar - one layer.

OK

I think you mean that Lance looks like me

Yes, I used to have that "Smiles not Miles" signature. I change my sig every once in a while. That motto really irritated someone and I got a "nasty" about it

I know just what you mean Dnvr. I'll be 12 years in January. I've "evolved" to the point that I just want to ride for fun and a little exercise.

I hope you like the Vittoria tires. I put Vittoria Rubino Pro Tech tires, 700x25, on both bikes last spring.

Hey - FLORIDA!!

Keep us informed - is it permanent or seasonal? I know you had difficulty finding good riding where you lived in GA.

Its permanent. The house we're "renting" (really cheap rent from friends) is temporary. We'll be living here while we look for a house to buy or a place to build. Closest bike trail is 11 miles away and my favorite is 22 miles away. We'd like to move within a mile or so of the favorite trail.
I'll keep you posted.

Here's the view out the front door.

Hey Dnvr and RonH: Don't slow down now - you're an inspiration to the rest of us, and I would get depressed if I thought slow down was inevitable in the next couple of years (I'm 23 months behind Dnvr)! Just think of all the things on your Bucket List and all the things you can add to it- like Penh's December weekend of 100 Km on the bike followed by a half marathon (the next day, thank goodness)! And you don't have to go to Cambodia - heck, it's all downhill from Grandfather Mountain to Miami, and getting warmer all the way, too, at this time of year.

I 'specially envy Denver all those push-ups: I seem to spend too much of the time battling with the dang computer to do much of that stuff.

Gotta keep them pedals cranking and show the young ones a thing or two!

Happy Thanksgiving all - don't eat too much Turkey, and do do a Turkey Trot (I don't know how many cities have them, but there's for sure one in Austin and another in Ft.Worth).

How many of us in the 65+ demographic use Strava? I live in a small town (whole county is maybe 30K folks) and the local segments have very few 65+. Not that I'm going to go out an kill myself on a segment to get ahead of "Joe", but a man has to have something to do in his spare time. I do look at the 200+ lb. group and i'm not at the bottom. Heck, I'd be pretty good in the 65+/200+ collection of folks.

I added the Cyclemeter app for my iPhone and am still trying to figure it out. Got todays ride results and now they're gone. All I can find are the speed and elevation graphs.

I ride a closed course of 20 miles, flat but windy. I turn 66 rpms and that's that. I have about ten turns but they are wide and I have to watch for cars in two roads.

Life's great, keep cranking!!

Angkor Wat 100K and Half Marathon

Since John Berry mentioned the Angkor Wat 100K and Half Marathon, I thought I'd give you a report. There were about 630 participants in the bike race and 6,000 in the Half Marathon. Cambodians were represented among the winners in both races, which we look at as a great thing as 'sport' is becoming more and more popular over here, and a good bike is generally not affordable.

I met my personal goals of (1) finishing, and (2) not finishing last. My time - on the Cannondale R1000 with flat bars - was 4-hours and 3-minutes, nothing to write home about, but considering the very rough roads, not too bad for a 66-year old. I was the second-oldest in the race, with a Cambodian guy from California, aged 76, also finishing. Some folks with mountain bikes also did well, because of the bad roads.

Earlier in the week I did a nice training ride up the newly-improved road to Bokor Mountain, made famous in the movie City of Ghosts, starring James Kahn, Depardieu, and Matt Dillon. The first 20K all uphill 1,000-meters (over 3,000 feet), and the second 10K up and down. This will become a 'must' bicycling destination for like-minded tourists in future, but on the day we did it, there were only two other bikers. I'm proud to say that my 12-year old son also made it up, perhaps the first 12-year old to do it.

First cold spell of the year over here and I am looking for something else to do other than Cough and sneeze. Flu bug has hit the family and I am the one that is not feeling too bad. The bike got as far as the house yesterday but the 15mph wind made me see sense. 25F this morning and it has started raining so I think it is a day to go to the "Mall" and keep the grandkids amused.

House and garden looking OK and I just want to ride. Weather against me or is it that I just wimping out? Don't care really as Plenty of days left before the Chistmas holiday and the chance to show every one else how much fitness you lose by not riding.

I just turned 65 so I would post. New to the forum also. I just ordered a new bike August 24th and am waiting for the builder to make it. It's a Lighthouse Sequoia. Expecting it to be ready in January sometime.
