I know what went wrong now.
I had a tough day cycling the other day and couldn't figure out why for a while. Now I know.
I have Sole inserts, which I like a lot. A few months after I bought them I received an offer for two pair of their socks -- for free. I took them up on it, and the socks seemed very nice. I wore them and enjoyed them.
After my rough day, when I took them off, I noticed they were marked, on the inside, "left" and "right."
Now, I can't see or tell the difference, but apparently my body subliminally knew I was riding with them on the wrong feet! Clearly that was the problem. That's a mistake I'll be sure to never make again.
Case closed.

So what was tough about your cycling day? Were you riding in circles? Feet clipped into the wrong pedals? Maybe facing the wrong way on your bike? I'm dying to know.

Ha! good one. Who would have to thought to look for L and R with socks?
I had a bad XC skiing day once, thought perhaps my underwear was tight
. Turns out I had the skis on the wrong feet. The old fashioned three pin bindings allowed me clamp the boots in with ease.

Ever since I got my first pair of bibs a few weeks ago, I'm terrified of putting them on backwards. No drawstring to mark front and back. It ruins my rides because I have to get off the bike and "reach in" front and back to check chamois position. Get lots of honks from the coeds riding around in sports car convertables though. "Hey geezer, having trouble finding it?"

I used to have a pair of cycling socks (could have been the same brand) that were left and right too. They were actually knitted with slightly different curves to accomodate the difference in left and right feet. I didn't replace them, because I could feel a difference when they were on the foot for which they were not intended. This was too much of a hassle. It's hard enough getting everything together for a ride without this added little step.
