Changing cleats

How do YOU know when it's time to change your cleats on your CrankBrothers Pedals? I have never had any of my cleats worn so badly that they slip out of the pedal. After about 6 months (approx. 2400 miles), I change them, just because they look bad. Should I wait longer or change them sooner?

I've never used CB pedals, but you can usually tell by looking at the part of the cleat that interfaces with the pedal. If it's worn thin compared to a new one, time to replace it. In my experience road cleats that get walked on wear a lot faster than recessed mtb cleats.

I have Keo's. Recently on a group ride a rider commented to me about my ankle turning out on my pedal stroke. I looked down and I was moving my ankle out every stroke. After the ride I looked at the cleat and it was worn down over 1/8" on one side causing my foot to follow the cleat's contact angle. New cleats made noticable difference.

added later: I had about 3,500 miles on the cleat.
