First I want to say that it's totally useless to compare performance between "platform pedals" and clipless pedals. The only valid comparison is between pedals with toe clips and clipless pedals.

If the OP had any genuine, non-placebo improvement, it's not because of the pedals' type of mechanism or platform size. It would have to be because of differences in weight (in the case of pedals, it's rotating weight, and so while it may not actually affect speed, it will affect how it feels to pedal), or differences in the stack height of the pedal (which affects saddle height), or perhaps also differences in how you placed the cleats on them (further forward or further back could have a perceptible effect).
