Lost my bike computer.
Last week I lost my computer on a ride. The thing just bounced off and by the time I noticed, it was gone, gone, gone. The weird thing is that I feel really relieved about it. I was pretty obsessed with average speed, overall mileage, trip distance, etc. I wonder if this has to do with age? I love biking and own a nice road bike and recumbent. Anyone else had this experience?

Road bikes and I use a Garmin on them. Gives me a lot more than a normal computer. But on the MTB- I keep breaking the Sensor mount so last time it broke- I didn't bother replacing it. That was about two years ago- but I still have the computer mount on the bars.

I guess I've had a similar experience. I had a Cateye Double Wireless on my primary road bike for about two years and after having some difficulties with the sending unit, the thing just gave up the ghost about a week before a long two-day charity ride. I wound up taking the sensor off the bike and left the computer at home. I thought about moving a wired computer from another bike, but ended up not doing it.
That was two months ago. The mount is still on the handlebars, but I haven't replaced the computer. I admit its more relaxing to "just ride" and not fixate on what my cadence is, how far I've gone, how fast I'm going at any given moment. I'm still completing my "normal" rides in the same elapsed time (actually, marginally getting faster) so I don't think I've lost anything. Its getting close to end end of season for my longer rides, so I'm not going to do anything about it now, but I'm sure that over the winter I'll replace it if I can find the right computer. I've been toying with the idea of a Garmin, but its a bit expensive - and I know the potential for focusing on the numbers instead of the ride experience will be overwhelming. |

My wife bought me a Garmin for the car in June. I can see where that would be cool to have on the bike. I will probably do a 360 next spring and put it on the bike. I would really hate to bounce that off of the pavement.

Except for a few occasions, I've been pretty much riding computer free for the last few years.
99% of my riding do not require a computer. |

My Sigma 1606 bike computer fell off my bike. I went back for it and got there just in time to see it get run over. Bummer. I really like that computer. I called Sigma to buy a new head. They asked me for he number on the back, and then said "We didn't like the mount on that version. Send it in and we'll replace it." Is that cool or what? Go Sigma! Besides, if you don't record your miles they don't make you stronger or help you lose weight. They don't count at all. It's like they never happened. |
The first few years I had computers on the two bikes and found it entertaining to know my speeds and more so to add up all the distances to find out that I was doing a bit over 2800 kms per year one year and 2700 the next. With that information milestone out of the way I sort of lost intrest. As the fleet grew and changed I never bothered mounting the original two computers onto the new bikes or getting any more computers to be able to keep up the tally.

I am getting to the point where I sometimes forget to 'reset' the thing when I start the ride....who can remember what it said when I started... so guess you could say I am half way there to not needing to be able to see the numbers.
Since I ride for exercize...most of the time... i really have not 'need' to know how far or how fast, but guess I still get a bit of facination about knowing. |
