Any Maine Riders here?

I'm 51. I keep tossing about the idea of where I might like to retire some day. I was thinking Florida, but no. Cycling is an important of my life, and I don't think I'd want to be in a place where the humidity can be so stifling for so long. That, and I keep hearing that Florida is just not good for cyclists.

I'm a New Englander. So, I'm thinking of the Portland Maine area. Portland is one of the places features in U.S. News and World Reports Good places to retire.

I've been to Portland a few times, and liked it. Winter? I can handle winter. Although I do know of a guy who moved from Boston, to Brewer Maine, because the Boston winters weren't tough enough....

I just want to hear from some Portland cyclists. What is life like for riders in Portland? What's life like in general, for retired folk? Sure seems like my kind of place.

Hi,
I live just outside Portland and commute in. It's a nice place. The last few years have seen a marked improvement in the way cyclists are treated. I mean, it's been dramatic.

Because we are a tourist trap there's lots of restaurants. I don't know what you like. The classical music is blah, the art scene stinks, live music is blecch (mostly).

But then there's the country roads, the mountains and the ocean.

People drive hundreds of miles to hit the outlets. I'm fifteen minutes away by car, but we usually ride the bikes there. We have gotten a ton of cycling duds cheap at the various outlets.

Every year I come up with a week long cycling trip, and every year it's different. Although, I must confess I don't always pick Maine.

We have a terrific gym in Portland, Lifestyles, and I can't say enough good about it. But you'll need it because the winters are longer than what you are used to.

I know that the state of Maine has a website with a bunch of bicycle ride routes listed, but I am feeling too lazy to look it up. I spend a little bit of time in the Brunswick/Boothbay Harbor area every year and like it a lot there. Haven't spent any time in the winter, though.
