Had my first eye(left) done today. I expected more discomfort than I am having, but I'm not complaining. Vision is notably improved, and after my follow up visit tomorrow, I should be able to ride.

I took the rest of the week off to recover, my shop is open and exposed to dust,dirt, diesel fumes, and enough wind to blow it all in my eye. And it is a good excuse to goof off for a few days.

My wife had both eyes done with corrective implants and she loves 'em. She still has to wear reading glasses but she no longer has to avoid driving at night.

Oh yes, I had cataracts in both eyes. I had cataract surgery several years ago on both of them, about six weeks apart. WOW, what a difference. Before the surgery it was like looking through a lightly frosted pane of glass. Everything was a little out of focus and colors were washed out. But I didn’t know it until the first eye was done. Then I could compare one eye with and one eye without cataracts. After the surgery reds were RED, blues were BLUE, and yellows were YELLOW. I agree with John wholeheartedly; if you are diagnosed with cataracts, have the cataract surgery. Then get out there and ride, the world will never look the same again!

Dave, As a Longhorn football season ticket holder, you can put me down as in favor of changing either the Big12 tie-breaker rules or the whole Big12 championship. With all due respect, Missouri should not be playing for the Big12 championship. Texas will sit at home and watch two teams, both of which Texas played and beat this season, play for the Big12 championship.

Just a cycling related FYI, I bought my first road bike in Austin in the late 70s while stationed at Bergstrom. I can't remember the name of the place but it was just off 35 near the airport--a combo bike shop and locksmith place. It was a Raliegh Super GranPrix. I rode that bike for eight years until it was stolen from my garage in Vegas.

I had my eye cover removed this morning after cataract surgery yesterday. WOW!!! Why did I wait so long? Having the other done next week. I thought the new hi def tv we bought was black and white. ITS VIVID color. Come on summer because I want to get out in the green and ride. It is dull and winter here by Lake Michigan.

Glad to see all these positive reports! Hubby has cataracts in both eyes and is good and ready for the surgery. He'll see the surgeon this month and will probably tell him "I'm ready when you are!". He says everything looks as if he's looking through a window screen. Daylight particularly bothers him, but his night vision is fine. He also has severe myopia and the doctor said he probably will still need glasses, but he's hoping he won't.

In the summer of 2005, I was having some eye problems so went to an eye specialist/surgeon for an exam. I had some sort of skin condition that affected my eyelids and eyelashes, so was prescribed some eye drops and some ointment to treat it.

Unfortunately, the medication caused me to have some fast growing cataracts and caused some temporary high eye fluid pressure. Some other medication took care of the glaucoma with no eye damage.

So in July 2006, I had both cataracts removed and replaced with corrective lenses, like permanent contacts. I opted to have the correction for clear distance vision so I could see far away as I'd been wearing glasses for near-sightedness since I was in the 3rd grade. The correction came out to between 20-20 and 20-15 in both eyes. One other benefit is as I get even older….I won’t get cataracts again, something almost everybody will get.

So now I have to wear cheaters to read and see the computer screen...I have 3 different strengths. I also use one of those over the head magnifiers for really close-up work. But I can see everything in the distance very clearly, quite a change from being almost legally blind since I was a kid (20-200 without glasses…couldn’t even see the big “E” at the top of the charts).

I had a hard time seeing the cycle computer so ordered some of the stick on corrective lenses, see here:

cut them to fit and put one lens on the right side of 2 pairs of my riding sunglasses. This works fine for reading the speed, mileage, etc. I also carry some cheaters with me on the bike so I can see to change a tire, read a route map, or read a menu at a café.

So, if you can't see up close for riding after both eyes are 'fixed', get some of those stick-on bi-focal lenses. You can get them in bigger cities in the big box or drug stores. I got mine on eBay, just do a search on 'OPTX'.

Most people I've talked to say that cataracts are generally more of a problem at night, but for me the problem was worst in the daylight. I had a rather small cloudy area in the middle of the lens. Every part of a lens illuminates every part of the image, so that in dim light with the iris opened up, I was seeing around the clouded area. In bright light with the iris closed down, I had to look through the clouds. The first indication I had of a problem was that I found myself compulsively cleaning my glasses...it was like looking through dirty glasses.

The same for me. Now I can't wait until after the first of the year, when my second surgery is scheduled.
It will be like a Christmas present.

I bet it was Cothron's. They use to be a bike and lock shop here in Austin. Now they are just a safe & lock / locksmith store. Back then the local bicycle industry was pretty simple, 10-speeds and sting-rays. But with the sophistication of road bikes, the advent of mountain bikes, and a LBS popping up on every corner, they got out of the bike business and focused on security.

Regarding the Big12 championship, please, PLEASE don't ask a Longhorn fan to root for OU. But I do understand your logic, as distasteful as it might be.

Bingo! That was it. I remember the place as a small pier and beam building with wood floors.

Distasteful indeed. But we had to do it for the OSU game--we can handle it one more time! But I'd rather see Mizzou take care of business so we don't have to!

Have had both eyes done and very pleased. No longer wear glasses except for drug-store readers.

My doctor bragged that he did the second eye in 6 minutes. I thought it would be better if he took his time and did it right, but he did it right too.
