I remember, and not too long ago, being quite proud of myself any time the total miles on a ride was into the teens. Anything above 20 miles was a major ride. Now I do not like to get dressed for less than

Any more than a trip to the local town (About 5 mile round trip)and it has to be Bibshorts and SPD's. And without the SPD's- I have to use the bike that has platform pedals.

More evidence of the N+1 factor - you need a bike with platform pedals so you can just hop on wearing street shoes for short hops.

20 miles - anything less doesn't seem worth the layers. That number will probably change in the summer when there are less pieces to put on!

Any road bike ride more than 2 miles gets bike bibs or shorts and shoes at least. If I am not going put on the bike shorts or bibs then I take the Revive or the Trek with platform pedals.

Unless there is an accident, mechanical failure, or sudden illness all of my rides at over 15 miles, and I always suit up. Now I ride my commuter to the store three miles away, but I don't consider that a ride. That's transportation, which is a distinction I make on this issue.

I wear whatever seems right for the ride I'm doing and choose the bike that seems right for that ride. What I choose to wear may have more to do with other factors than just mileage. Any time I get on a bike and ride I consider it a bike ride. Why would transportation not be a ride? I don't get that at all.

I was going to say 20, but my uphill interval route is about 16, so I guess I would say 15, but I cannot recall the last ride I did that was less than 15, Unless you count riding my mountain bike down to the field about 1/2 mile to see my wifes horse. I did not change fopr that one.

Probably 20 for me...I've done much longer rides in regular clothing, even jeans and running shoes, but dressing has become part of the ritual.
FWIW, I wear mountain bike shorts and ordinary T shirts for nearly all my riding, including centuries. I have three or four pairs of Lycra shorts and several jerseys, but haven't had them out of the drawer in years. When I say "dressing for a ride," I mean baggy MB shorts and a T.

Even going downtown (round trip 5km) I'll put a pair of shorts w/ chamois on, maybe under sweats or "dress" shorts. But I take my old commuter w/ platforms. High theft area downtown.

I might ride downtown, about 5 miles round trip, on my newly-flat-pedaled Bianchi Eros without cycling shorts, but I'd still wear my helmet and gloves.

I never ride my bikes without "suiting up" into appropriate bike clothing. Mainly because of the pedals. If I'm going to put on bike shoes there's no point in not putting on bike shorts, jersey etc. Also, I wouldn't ride without a helmet, so between the shoes and the helmet, and gloves etc. I'm pretty much halfway dressed for it anyway.
I generally won't go out for a ride where I don't plan to do at least 30 miles (this doesn't count my commute which is only 15 miles RT.) Once in awhile I'll do a shorter ride in my neighborhood after work to work on hills.

Unless it's just to get a quart of milk at the grocer four blocks away; I don't have this problem. cause I don't do short rides. About as short a ride as I do.. 20 miles.

I suit up to ride on my trainer, and that never leaves the basement. So zero miles for me. Though I usually wear a t-shirt instead of a jersey for those rides.
I have been known to suit up and not even ride. Wonder what a psychologist would think of that?
