Biking in the Everglades
 

I will be in Florida for a few weeks and will be dropping a couple of people off at the Miami airport and then heading down to Key West. My wife and I were thinking of taking a short ride in the Everglades since we will be driving right by. We will have cyclocross bikes with 32 cc tires. I read about a 15 mile road called the Snake Valley Tram Road (north end of the park) that sounds OK. I also read about something called the Old Ingraham Road near Royal Palms I believe but I couldn't tell whether this was paved, dirt, gravel or whatever. Has anyone biked either of these areas? Are they OK? Any other suggestions?

How warm is it

I used to live in the Keys, and the glades can be a bit buggy when its warm.
I had a flat tire once and nearly was devored by mosiqito's maybe its to cool still.:eek:

There are a few rides in the area, Shark River, one of the posters I think jespal had some photos.

I like an area called Loop road or 40 mile bend, start at Oasis ranger station then go east 5 miles to munroe station then south (rocky road 20 miles), all the way around back to Oasis is 40 miles. Weekend its kinda of busy.

Warning there are gators, snakes, etc. wintertime no bugs and a great time to visit the area.

Another area is Everglades City to Chokoloskee, there is a great boat ride at the national park.

I think I read somewhere that alligators find bicyclists exceptionally tasty, but I'm sure there's no need to worry. Really, you'll be fine. Really.

Although, I suppose being on cylcocross bikes will help if you do meet any alligators.

So, don't worry about the ALLIGATORS.

Gators are only faster than people for the first 30 yards or so....:)

I live less than 10 miles from the everglades and right now its definitely hot enough for bugs, winter lasts 2 weeks down here.

never ridden there unless you count US 27 which is adjacent to the everglades.

Don't take you dog and I hear they only can run as afast as a race horse for about 30 ft.:eek:
I grew up in Florida most gators are pretty mellow unless some stupid human has been feeding them, then they are extremly pushy and dangerous.
We had one that would sunbath on our flag pole sundeck at UNSH Orlando and we would chase it off with a broom, so we could hoist the colors, it was a rather large animal. They are not as aggresive as crocks, but can be dangerious if not afraid of humans/

watch out for wild burmes and ANA"S most stupid humans who become tired of their pet snakes release them in the everglades and they now have a problem with wild transplant snakes/
