And if I go out on a nice Saturday, I will see literally 100's of bicyclists and will have difficulty saying "Hi!" to everyone while still bicycling safely.

You're a Funny Guy Beanzer!:roflmao2:

And, I should add, my MASI is Fixed Gear which is even-more special than a single-speed (though it is that too).

All that aside, I didn't recognize you 'cause you were riding a mountain bike. Who'd a thunk it? The Very Famous roadie-Beanzer on a mountain bike :)?

Plus, we were both a bit soggy by that time . . .

Should we let the Beanz in even though he doesn't ride fixed?

I think it would be okay. He is a very good Fred, after all!

I don't think we need a video, but you're right, Mr. Beanz isn't 50 yet. Still a kid, pretty much.

Well some of the unfriendliness can just be concentration or focus. If you are out there working hard or just thinking of stuff, you might not notice others and their friendly gestures.

On the other hand, there are definitely cliques. There are cyclists who think that wearing certain clothing and having certain components makes them "better" riders who will be degraded if they associate with riders who are not "as good" as they are. But don't you get that sort of feeling all over any way?

There is another thing in that there are almost as many different kinds of cyclists are there are well cyclists. Some cyclists ride to compete with others. Some cyclists are "racers". Some cyclists ride to see how many miles they can log in. Some cyclists ride to get to the nearest ice cream shop. Some cyclists ride to work. Some cyclists ride as a means of sight seeing. Some cyclists ride just to unwind. Some cyclists ride as a social event. Some cyclists ride to get exercise. It is hard to interact when there are so many competing motivations. Each group tends to judge the merits of other cyclists by their own standards.

Good point Alice!

Okay, we can invite Beanz :thumb:, so how's 'bout we have it on the SART? I know Beanz could find it!
How about March 21 or 22? That puts it right between the Solvang Century and the Solvang double century for me. Would that work for you?

I'm thinking we could start at Yorba Linda Regional Park since there's lots of parking there and its easy access from the 91 freeway. Or . . . I'm open to suggestions.

I'm a roadie and on most of my rides a good day is seeing three other riders. I'll wave to everyone including little kids in their driveways. I also wave to motorcycles since they started to wave to me and I don't want a brother to think ill of me.

Maybe it's me, but, riding along a road at 20 mph and having a rider coming the other direction at 20 mph, and being at least 40' accross the way, I can't tell if the guy is in a kit or if he waves at me. It's even more difficult to see if he flashes his gloved hand and nods his helmet like I do.

Timtruro 02-24-09 02:32 PM

Riding skill and more importantly enjoyment, is inversely proportional to the amount of biker wannabee clothes and equipment people have on, I know that is a gross generalization and perhaps an overstatement but, Just saying...........

This is a problem I used to have. Mountain bikers offroad always say hello or make some comment as they pass. Speeds are lower and Offroaders are a friendly bunch. I always used to think that roadies were an arrogant lot- and did not pay recognition to mountain bikers they see on the road. On the way out to the hills- we would be nice and clean and just a bunch of casual riders out for a spin. However on the way back -covered in mud- and sometimes blood- it is obvious that we were cyclists- but we still never got recognition from the roadies.

That was untill I got a road bike. There are the few stuck up ones that do not recognise you unless you are in team kit and on a $5,000 bike- but most roadies do offer some recognition to other riders you meet. It may be a flick of the hand- or just a gentle nod and even rarer- a "Howdie" as they pass you. It is there but you have to look hard to see it.

This guy was good! I've seen him a few times with another rider that is VERY strong. Theyusually ride together but this day, this guy was alonw. I saw him up ahead about 1/4 mile. I did catch up when we hit the windy section, that's when he jumped on. After that point, I couldn't lose him if I tried. Plus he did move to the front and do part of the work so it was cool. He just didn't talk, neither do they others he rides with!:D

Nope, not 50 yet but I feel like it!:p

I gota put in a plug to the good side of bicyclist's today. I finally got my new Jamis Trail-X 3.0 Hardtail MTB today and left the car at the LBS and headed out! I rode on MUP's, street, MTB trails all around Colorado Springs and it seemed that EVERY RIDER waved and at least noded at me, a few even smiled and said howdy, that's very different than the last few rides. LOL, maybe it was my "SMILE" that was beeming like a bright light on a semi-truck, I guess they can sense when someone get's a NEW bike!;):thumb:

I wave to everyone, including runners because they oftentimes turn out to be triathletes and ride bikes too. I wave to kids. I wave to any motorist who even remotely appears to cut me a break. I wave to policemen on road detail. I wave to construction workers and the trash collection guys. There used to be a local guy who looked like Jesus and he walked around town carrying a cross on his back (no lie here!) and I would wave to him. I guess that wasn't fair because he would have to put the cross down to wave back but I couldn't help myself. I once waved to another woman who was on a bike, and she waved back and yelled for me to stop. We ended up chatting by the roadside for 30 minutes, then riding to get lunch together, and now I've made a new friend!

I am a waver. :D

jack002 02-27-09 07:57 AM

Yeah, I used to wave. I waved at everyone. One day I waved at a woman, we stopped and talked at a red light, we went out a couple-a times, then dated, got married, had six kids, got divorced. (some of these facts were altered for dramatic effect)

Needless to say, I dont' wave at people any more! :D

I live in a beach/college town; on a sunny day if I wanted to wave to every fellow rider I would have to put a battery operated waving hat on so I would not miss anybody and hurt their feelings.

Here is a Santa Cruz wave for ya, Steamers Lane, a few blocks from me

Hi Alice,

You got that idea from my avitar, and you are correct, I live in Whittier. SGRT is fine with me, so where should we meet? I could ride down Coyote Creek and we could meet at the bridge over the river that connects Coyote Creek to SGRT. Or . . . I'm open to suggestions.

What start/meet time is good for you?
