Ever had your bike rack stolen?
 

I occasionally mount my bike on the back of my car with a rack that I leave in the trunk otherwise. It attaches to the back of the car. When I get to my riding destination, I often am too lazy to take the rack off the car and store it in the trunk while I'm riding. But I wonder how about how often things like that get stolen. Seems it would be hard to steal without cutting a couple of straps, but then again, I'm not a thief so what do I know?

Anyway -- any of you ever have one stolen, or hear of one stolen from someone else?

Off hand I'ld say there isn't a "Ghost" of a chance that it'll get stolen.

Fortunately, have never had that happen, at least not yet. And the one I use, you wouldn't need to even cut the straps, just loosen them and remove the rack. I tend to leave it on a car without the bike for days at a time too.

Your rack is not set up correctly.

I realize times are bad, DG, but for god sake man, can't you afford a decent car?

Seriously? I have never had my rack stolen but I still don't leave it on the car anyway. I lock it in the trunk or back seat. I think all the sun here in California would be hard on the straps, too.

Since I stopped driving it doesn't get much use.

I see them left on other people's cars and wonder the same thing.

With the racks. I deliberately chose a rack that comes off in a poofteenth of a second. It has a tow bar mount that stays on the car. The rack drops into a couple of tubes but is held in place by gravity and a couple of those pins they used to use to hold down the bonnet on hotted up cars (hood? the big flat thing that covers the engine cavity). To remove/replace the rack, it's simply a matter of pulling the pin and lifting out the rack which then drops into the boot (trunk) of the car. Simple and quick - the rack rattles a bit when driving but I got used to that quickly and the sheer convenience of the thing is wonderful for someone as lazy as me.

As far as leaving it on goes, I think the danger would be less of someone deciding they liked your nice rack and more of some half wit deciding to vandalise the thing because it makes them feel less insignificant. A simple lock somewhere would prevent the former but only a security guard will prevent the latter.

Actually, I use a hitch rack with a locking hitch pin. Then there is the locking bicycle clamp. In addition to that, I install multiple locking cables through the rack, wheels and frames of the bikes that are onboard. I have left this assembly in restaurant parking lots while on vacation without loss..............knock on wood.

I could be wrong, but I simply don't see trunk racks being secured in a similar manner.

I have a Saris Bones on my car all the time, it has been there for 2+ years now. I don't want my riding pushed away because I am too lazing to put the rack back. The only inconvenience is that most car washes don't like racks so I have to use stations equipped with touchless washes (power jets) or wash the car myself.

BTW: I wouldn't allow you to put my bike on your rack. The way this thing has been set two bikes would spend the ride banging against each other. :(
I wouldn't mind sharing a ride with hermes though, especially if I drive.

I can't wait to see what kind of offspring those two produce but I'll bet that it will be fast!

Sorry DG, I've had one on the back of my Honda CRV for the past four years without a problem.

To answer your question seriously, no, I have not had a rack stolen.

I've left the rack mounted on the car during day rides with no problems. On occasion when my car was parked for a week I've always locked the rack inside the car.
