New Risk

For those of you who would like to worry about sch things, this appeared in AP today:

"ORLANDO, Fla. – Warning to weekend warriors: Swim-bike-run triathlons pose at least twice the risk of sudden death as marathons do, the first study of these competitions has found.

The risk is mostly from heart problems during the swimming part. And while that risk is low — about 15 out of a million participants — it's not inconsequential, the study's author says.

Triathlons are soaring in popularity, especially as charity fundraisers. They are drawing many people who are not used to such demanding exercise. Each year, about 1,000 of these events are held and several hundred thousand Americans try one."

Please note that acording to this study, thats one death in every 2-3 years

How can we alow such an outrage? Why these things should be regulated!

Edit, thats more like 3-5 deths per year, I miscalcuilated, Why its even worse than I thought! We all must feel like we need to go out and wrn the world of such a massive danger! Plus tri bikes are ugy IMHO!

I ran the finish line for a large triathalon in St Louis for several years. I used to tell the triathletes the event was way too easy for guys like me. The good guys took about 3 hours to complete our event. I'd drown during the swim and be finished in about 15 minutes.

Just do the bike and run parts and skip the swim. I guess that would be a duathlon, huh?

Of course, some wiseacre would then do a study and say that there'd be a 15-in-a-million chance of dying in either of the running legs....

Sudden cardiac arrest while exercising is one of the least of my worries.
