Lingering effects of anesthesia
 

Spent 3 hrs. under the knife on Tuesday getting my sinuses fixed (feel like I came out last in a bar fight)
Rode for an hour yesterday (with Dr's clearance) and was amazed at how weak I felt. I'm sure it must take days for all of the anesthesia to clear the system. It's a good time to take it easy and enjoy some leisurely rides. Plus, I can breathe again!

When I had major "brain" surgery, it took several months before I had my energy at pre-op levels.

I doubt it's the anesthesia but rather the procedure itself. I have a bad gag reflex and have to get IV sedation to have dental work done. Last time I was under for 3 hours late in the afternoon.
Next morning went out for my usual 50 miler. Just felt a little dehydrated is all.

I'm having surgery on Monday and will share my experience afterward.

General anesthesia is pretty hard on the system. I've heard of operations not being done on people or animals, not because the operation was taxing on the body, but because the body would not survive the anesthesia. It's why local anesthesia is always preferable, if possible. Of course, some people may be more affected than others.
Any docs here?

EastOMidnight--You are an incredible stud. I had minor surgery two weeks ago, and just got back on the bike yesterday. The rest seems to have done me good. I beat my personal record in a 12-mile time trial by almost a minute.

I had "minor?" Surgery yesterday. Similar to the one I had three weeks ago.

This morning/today, I feel like I've been run over by a freight train.


Dr. said I could start riding again around Thursday. I sure hope I feel better then than I do now.

I ve heard that more people die from problems from anesthesia than from the surgical procedures, to put you to sleep they have to put you down to the point you need assistance to breath and are very close to the level required to stop your heart, its a delicate procedure and not everyone repsonds the same way, sometime people have blood clots from laying still so long and a slow pulse and that can cause a stroke or a lung emoblism that can be fatal. and there's always a risk of contracting an infection.
I had a 6 hour procedure done once that requred considerable meds to reverse the anesthesia and finally wake up and nearly three days to clear it all and walk again. Dr said that happens sometimes..:eek:

When I had the bypass- they put me out for 3 days. When I woke up I did not bother about how weak I was. I was just glad to be awake.

About 10 years ago I had to be put under for minor surgery. Took 4 days before I could concentrate properly- let alone do anything physical.

What they all say. General anaesthetic really takes it out of you -- it's like being hit by a sledgehammer, but there's no mark where the damn thing landed. Just take it easy for a bit, it will get better.
