Stupid LAw

HI,
Found out there's a really stupid law in Norfolk VA, that if you don't have a City Sticker on your bike the Police Can Seize your bike.

https://www.wtkr.com/news/wtkr-biking...,3780539.story

I won't go into the details but its only enforced, in certian parts of town...

Agree- that is stupid but ignorance of the law is not a defence. Time to get registered- just in case you stray into the area on one of the longer bike rides. Would be a long one for me though.

What about visitors who do not live within the city?

That's quite an ignorant law. Class warfare, it looks like.

If you lived in an area with lots of different communities who all had the same law, your bike would get full of stickers!!

Reminds me of when we lived in Illinois, and each community had their own sticker. You couldn't use a park in a town unless you had that town's sticker.

This country has many non-enforceable laws on the books.
When we lived in MI, our town had a law prohibiting bikes on the road. Also a law prohibiting bikes on the sidewalk.
Drunk driving laws . . . how many drunk drivers end up in jail? Loosing their license?
Just had a case in Tucson; driver hits and kills cyclist. Driver under the influence of drugs. Driver gets good attorney and he was sentenced to 5 days in jail. Poor driver is probably now smoking a joint to celebrate.

So... I'm guessing that if someone gets their bike confiscated and later on shows up with their bill of sale that they can get their bike back?

Wow, in this age where police departments should be trying to win over the public to gain some respect this sure is running off in the wrong direction.

Madison has a law that requires all bikes ridden by residents of Madison to have a permit. Cost $10 annually. Not required if you ride a bike in Madison but don't live there. Fine is supposedly $50 if you are ticketed for not having one.

I would be surprised if 10% of the bikes in Madison are registered.

Is there actually a written law that says that you must register your bike and get a city sticker?

Or, perhaps an illegal form of profiling?

Say that is odd! It seems as though the police are unabashedly profiling the riders. The whole thing is unlawful. To me, that means that in Norfolk one might happily disobey the law, any law at all, if he wants to and/or thinks he can get away with it. If the government has no respect for law, why should any one else? Good job, Norfolk.

If your an out of towner, your bike gets stolen by the Norfolk cops as well. That must be a really long walk home.

And if you do not live in the city, how can it be legal to take a bike that complies with the registration for the city the owner lives in?

Too bad the Norfolk cycling groups do not get a large number of cyclist to go down and flood the registration centers, demanding a license that day. Jam up the centers and run up the cost and then see how the city council likes the program.

My 2 cents: Don't visit Norfolk and if you live there, move elsewhere.
Why do citizens put up with this nonsense?

I just crossed it off of my list.
