I went to the river...
Yesterday the sun was out so I decided to make a mad dash down
to the river.
I live almost exactly 10 miles from the Kentucky River and as
a bonus it is almost all downhill
( the flip side is that it is
almost all uphill coming home. ).
A couple of days earlier a F3 tornado wandered through the
county causing a lot of damage and killed a couple of people.
This is only the second time I have been down to the river.
The first time was only a couple of days after I got my Sequoia Comp
last November.
It ended in a disaster. I was using toe clips at the time and 'unclipped'
the left foot and fell to the right.
After I got up, had a bit of water, then mounted the bike and promptly
fell over again.
I had tried going to far to soon after about a 35 year layoff...
This time I rolled down to the river at about 17 mph and rolled to
an easy stop after unclipping my SPDs. ( Unfortunately my sigma
computer *reset* all of the trip data when I came to a stop...arrgh.)
Coming back I averaged 12 mph ( the computer did not reset on the
return trio and I did not fall over
The river was up so there was hardly any traffic on the trip ( see the
picture...)

I've seen that done.
I live about 2 miles from Missouri's KATY trail. Anytime I want I can coast down to the trail, ride untill I'm halfway tired and ride back home up the hill. The tricky part is knowing when I'm halfway tired. Trust me, I've made some real bad calls.

That little ferry reminds me of the one that was in operation on the Ouachita River at Moro Bay, AR. Basically it was a barge with a small boat attached. The bow of the boat was attached near the middle of the barge with a pivot point. The boat backed away from the ramp and then pivoted around and pushed the barge to the other side.
Sounds like you had a good ride. Thanks for the pics. I couldn't read the historical marker. What does it say?

Right pretty! River's just a tad high if you ask me. Think of that - oldest continuous business in Ky!
It's easy to forget to build up stamina in gradual stages... if you push too hard to begin with, you might just go off the idea. Even when I was younger, after a six month layoff I remember it taking numerous 10 mile rides before I could sustainably up it to 15. What's the hurry?
