Saving the tough climbs for last is Satanic. We have a local century like that (OKHT) and I don't see myself ever doing it, because I'm a wuss.

As far as walking is concerned, it slows you down and expends valuable energy. I hate doing it, but it still counts, and I still do it.


One little critique: after reading this entire thread I don't even know what state this event is in. Yes, I can google it (I intend to) but a report should include locale and maybe a photo or two.

And expression of existential angst always works for me.

"Kidney stone Challenge"
"Stroke or MI? Extravaganza"
"Nifty Near-death Fifty"

I believe these would sell out on the strength of their names alone.

Did you happen to see a rider crash just before the big climb around mile 60? He was pulling a paceline and hit the pothole that was in the shade. Just had some road rash and his bike needed some tweaking but he finished about the same time as you. In fact his speedplay pedal flew apart near the last switchback at the finish. He put 3 of the 4 screws back in it and finished the ride. He works with me.

I've done a lot of rides and I tell everyone those last 4 miles are the toughest finishing stretch I've ever done. Just Relentless. I think it took me 6 hours to do the first 100 miles or so and 30+ minutes to do the last 4 miles. I always enjoyed getting sprayed by misty water at the last rest stop.
