Road Maint
HI,
well our freindly road dept was Milling and preping the road for re-paving, and let me say that a milled road is rather rough...
but the really bad stuff is that creosote mixture of oil and stuff they spray on the road just prior to paving. AAWWWWWWCrapppp.
I ran through a patch of that oily goo and it made that gound up road stuff stick to the tires. Instant mountian tire nobbs
My tires were rubbing the brakes by the time I was back.
I took a ice scrapper and pushed most of the road crap off the tires and then wiped them down with a light mixture of paint thinner it removed all the tar. Wiped all that stuff off to prevent the tire from dissolving.
PS I do have some nice poka dots on my legs and ars from the tar...
well that was a fun cleaning of the bike, and that chain was pretty messed up too.

Think yourself lucky- It is time for what I think you call "Chip n' Seal" over here. One of the blokes I work with was driving on a road they were spraying tar on and something went wrong as he passed the wagon. He now has a 2 tone car on one side. At least it won't rust- but it is going to cost someone a respray to bring the car back to normal.
And in France a couple of years ago and on a back country hill and I found a patch of "Treacle" filled with stones. Must have been 4" of the stuff and it was nearly time to practice a somersault over the bars. Something must have gone wrong with the mix of the Tar and it was still Wet.

There are times when it is best to turn around and find an alternate route. This would have been one of those times.

There is NOTHING worse to ride/drive/walk/run/crawl on than chip seal. I would like to meet the person that came up with that idea. At night. Alone. In a dark alley. With a club. And a bucket of tar and some gravel.

Posted by me back in March 2008:
....Chip Seal....
The scourge of road bikes.
Where I live, our pavement starts out fairly smooth when new, but the rain, road traffic, people with studded snow tires (not really needed where I live, but some people think so...) beat up the asphalt filler between the rocks in the pavement, leaving basically just the top of the rocks imbedded in the remaining asphalt, so in a lot of places it's like riding on a gravel road with big rocks, except they don't move around, just bounce the bike around.
A time or two when I rode on 'real' chip seal (thankfully not fresh), it was smoother than most of the roads where I ride most of the time.
Going from an inexpensive aluminum frame/carbon fork to a full carbon frame/fork was nice, much easier on the 50+ body.
