50+ Woman wins French National Title

Jeannie Longo will be 51 in October, she just won the French National Time Trial racing against women half her age....amazing! I watched her race in the Coors classic races in the 1980's, she was hard to beat then, hammering the mountain stages with impressive power and skill, that was a LONG time ago and she's still on top????

As soon as I saw the title of your post, Jeannie Longo's name popped into my head. Incredible cyclist!

I saw that this morning as well. Congrats Longo.

Here is a link to the results of the women's TT in the Beijing Olympics. http://results.beijing2008.cn/WRM/EN...html#CRW011101 Longo was 4th. Christine Thorburn, member of our racing club, 38 years old was 5th 2.44 seconds behind Longo.

In our practice TTs, Christine is scary fast and only a few local elite men can beat her. I cannot imagine her slowing down much either. As I remember, she had a couple of crashes last year that impacted her training for the Olympics.

I think if the women stay healthy and motivated, they do not lose much, if any, speed as they age compared to men.

And we have the endurance thing, too.

Exactly. Someone should plant the RAAM bug in Jeannie's ear. I'm sure she'd approach it w/ a better attitude than Jock Boyer did almost a quarter century ago.

She's truly amazing though, winning titles when I was still in school (seemingly a bazillion years ago...), and we're the same age.
