Still ‘hill testing’ the fleet with short rides after winter maintenance performed by me.
What is hill testing?, (you ask). Well it’s making sure the brakes get you down safely and returning up to base, that your small/big can be mashed OOS (out of saddle) without going into the spokes.
I especially appreciated the well worn Madi Gras beads around the neighbor’s piggy statues. Missed that party.
Maybe leftover from Lunar NY.

I went out in the shop for my day's intervals on my resistance rollers, only to be totally shocked. I went out to check the mail first, and it was sunny! Back inside, changed into my outdoor togs and did my FTP intervals on the road. So much more fun, though just as hard. Only 18 miles and 500' but I did what I had to do. Temperatures were in the upper 40s and didn't even need a jacket. Only 5s off my 2016 PR for the Lowell Hill, too. Not bad for March.

A nice 50 miles after walking 18 holes this morning. Spotted these spring flowers alongside the road. Wild purple violets maybe?

100 miles this week thus far, and still have a few days left. New ebike has been a complete joy to ride, and still really, really motivating even after a year. Now riding mostly on the gravel roads, with the exception of a group 20 mile ride on city/suburban roads yesterday. As long as the days are nice, I'm out on my bike. Now just waiting for the trees to start budding out for Spring.

Been getting a lotta rain this winter. This is a low water bridge crossed on a recent 40 mile ride.

Nice day to ride some gravel. Just enough tree lined roads to help keep the wind manageable. I really enjoy this 40 mile loop out of N Iredell Middle School. No long climbs but enough hills to accumulate 3000’ of climbing. Plus it’s always a treat to grab lunch at Shiloh General Store.

Woke up to this. v v v v Spent the next hour shoveling snow and that's when the skies cleared. Sunny but a frigid -29 C (-20 F). Took the 970 out for a spin and also tested out a pair of recently acquired Sturmfist gloves.

I managed to get in almost 36 miles on the C&O today, my longest ride since getting back on a bike this Dec after a 23 year hiatus. I rode from Brunswick just past Shepherdstown and back. Looks like I should be able to make it to about Snyder's Landing next sunday. 
Between running and cycling I managed over 7 hours of aerobic exercise this week. I'm very pleased with that and plan to build up more and more.
Earlier this week I swapped out the stock 90mm/7deg rise stem for a 90mm/35deg stem and from the stock 40cm regular drop bars to some 42cm specialized hover road bars. The bars are a compact drop and elevate the tops 15mm. When I first bought the bike I knew I couldn't ride with the stem low like I had back in the 80s/90s so I got a smaller frame than I would've bought back then so it'd have a shorter top tube. Also, the thing has a bunch of spacers so it was much, much higher than I used to use. All the arthritis in my neck is probably partly due to my old bike setups.
With the new setup riding on the brake hoods felt pretty good and I spent most of today's ride there. The shallow drop feels pretty weird and may not have a lot of utility but the jury is still out. I was able to lift my head up and down after today's ride so that's a huge improvement over my previous 2 longest rides. It sure looks like an "old man" setup now.

After yesterday’s 40 mile gravel ride I rode 61 miles on the road bike today. Another great day to be out riding.

Forgive me Father for I have sinned. It's been 8 days since my last ride and three weeks since my last confession.
But I did get a ride in last night at dusk, 19.7 miles, some of my favorite hills.
I felt something crawling down my forehead and I was like what the heck is that? A single rolling bead of sweat, which I haven't felt since last fall. I get a cloud of vapor around me in winter but not sweat. I guess winter's over.

This evening, to the greenway, then carry the bike up the trail a ways, then reverse course, carry it back down and head for home. Lovely, trees showing hints of budding, 68F.

Looked outside about 9:00am and although it was overcast the trees were very still so I decided to wait until about 10:30am to go for a ride. Big mistake. By then there was about a 15mph cross-wind blowing and by the time I got to the last mile of a cat 2 climb it had turned into a 20mph front quartering wind. Worst part was I had my 11-30T cassette on which I normally climb up the steepest part in the 27T cog. Today I was in the 30T cog and struggling. Finally made it but sure wish I would have had the 11-32T or 11-34T cassette installed. Coming back wasn't much better other than the first mile. On the plus side when I got home my Edge 830 informed me my VO₂ max had increased to 42 ml/kg/min so it wasn't all bad I guess.
