A Friday night ride ( or is a night ride by the time we finish ). The Big Wheel gang of 4 that does late afternoon / evening rides year-round. In a week we'll be starting and ending in the dark

Penultimate ride for the season; 44.5 km. First time my feet felt a bit cold at the end of the ride. Booties? Nah, time to get into the XC skiing mindset.

Been enjoying family. Fall always brings more yard work. So took first 20 miler in a while, more accurately = 10 miles twice.

Actually, it was a day of sprinkles and damp pavement. And classic PNW gray.

Still a lot of colour in our Puget Sound Cascade foothills.

Just cruising - but there is the occasional empty large hauler. Decent pavement and nice 25mm make it smooth.

The bogs may turn winter’s green with their moss and mold.
edit: oh yeah - titanium for the wet days, but not wet enough for the weight of fenders and rain stuff.

It seemed like a fun idea to ride to Keaton’s BBQ for some chicken which is due north from my house. But riding in headwinds for 45 miles without a break took almost all the fun out it! Fortunately the wind direction stayed out of the north for my return trip so that part was awesome!!

Really awesome ride with a couple friends on Saturday. Beautiful sunny day but windy. We rode by Aunt Bea’s house where she lived after the Andy Griffith Show.

We had also planned a stop at a small rural church cemetery. A good cycling friend unexpectedly passed away at only 44 years old from a heart condition. When we rolled into the church they were having a plate BBQ lunch! Plus another good cycling friend and his wife were working the BBQ. We got to eat bbq along with banana pudding plus visit the cemetery.

After struggling up some 12% hills on full stomachs we enjoyed beers at a local brewery. Just my kind of ride!!!

Made it up Mt Lemmon outside of Tucson today. I got to the summit trailhead at 9,000' for the first time in twelve years--no snow, good winds, felt strong today. Total 70 miles and 8,000' of climbing.

We just moved into our new retirement home in Tucson, pretty close to the start of the Catalina Hwy. I spent the summer in Colorado on some big climbs, like 11,000' up Mt Evans from my house in Golden. The intervening months of not much climbing didn't affect me much today.

I thought I was smiling in the photo below. I guess even my face was fatigued.

We were just south of the latest ‘atmospheric river’. The fields are not flooded (yet) in my valley area.

With highs in the 70’s today the roads were begging to be ridden on. Walked 18 holes, had lunch then rode 60 miles. The first picture reminds me of my working days. This is a “Big Power Line”. I stopped at one of our local breweries owned by veterans for a brown ale with about 12 miles to go. Only had one but two would have been nice!!

I thought the wrist pain from a non-cycling related strain might get worse on a ride. I was right! Low sun and a very chilly mid-40s was another reason to reduce the mileage with regular cycling shoes & gloves.

Got in 18 miles in sunny weather we had nice month for November here in Colorado springs which is not normal this time of year! It was a Point The Wheel kinda ride and there were lot's of bicycle riders out and about!

Stopped for a break at the monument valley pickleball courts along the Pikes Peak Greenway.

Having a late November birthday I have either never had good enough weather or a good opportunity to ride my age on my birthday. I went to work today thinking about how the weather was going to be in the 70s and I knew I had to make the time so I bailed after an hour. I went home, loaded a bike and explored Tulsa's River Parks trail. The toughest decision was if I would take my Aluminum Trek or one of my vintage bikes. I decided on this '84 Raleigh I recently bought and overhauled. I'm glad I picked it, because while there were several vintage riders out there, I was one of the few riding vintage. It was a great way to celebrate 57 trips around the sun.

Rode to the top of Mt Lemmon again yesterday, same ride as two weeks ago. It takes me about that long to fully recover from the 8,000' of climbing. I've ridden a couple hundred miles since then, just not that much climbing. I hope to do that ride twice a month over the winter. When the snow comes, I'll have to cut it a few miles short. It's a fun ride, from saguaros to pines--I even saw a marmot at the summit yesterday, after dodging roadrunners (and a coyote) in the morning.

I'm keeping in shape for a peak-bagging climb of nearby Rincon Peak with my athletic young nephew. That'll include a three-day backpacking traverse across the eastern unit of Saguaro Nat'l Park, partly on the Arizona Trail. He's a bikepacker and MTBer, so we don't ride together. But we do share a love of hiking, and he needs some mentorship in camping.

It's good to have a younger generation interested. I joined a volunteer trail crew working on the Arizona Trail on Mt Lemmon last weekend. The crew was staffed with plenty of twenty-somethings, heartening to see. I hiked to the meeting point in town, and the young man who ended up being my partner for the day cycled there. Though 40 years separated us, we had a lot in common, and I was able to keep up with the work. He came away fully committed to keep cycling!

Fighting off sinus issues……was able to ride 30+ miles at a comfortable pace up to the in-laws new retirement center.

Got to finally ride in the "Chasing Santa 15K" bike ride to support "Christmas Unlimited" this year!! 100 riders in "full santa claus suits, even with the 9 AM start at below 30 F, Dec. 4th. 2021.

44* and raining so decided to do my first FTP test on ZWIFT. Will be 67 in 3 days - so early happy b-day to me. The result was a FTP of 226 and W/Kg of 3.06 (I weigh 165 lbs). Using an on line calculator, I had an age related adjustment of a 35 year old Category 2 at the lower end of Cat 2. A pretty good early birthday present since I have been recently doubting my ability.

I’ve been off the bike briefly dealing with sinus issues. We’ve figured out that the sinus issues have been triggered over the years by our fresh cut frasier fur Christmas Trees. Anyway I rode from the house to get Lexington BBQ for lunch. You can never go wrong there!!!

“Interesting” day on the bike. Wet weather altered our planned group ride to a “group of one”. Although it rained more than I’d planned the mild temperatures kept it very comfortable. Usually it can get very warm wearing a rain jacket but today was perfect for one.

Headwinds on the last half. Cut a tire at 65 miles but was able to boot it and get back home. When I unzipped the saddle bag to get out a spare tube the zipper on the bag busted…..and my jersey pockets were already full with stuff.

Visited Earl Gillon’s resting spot. He remains the greatest. Thinking of the Gillon family over the holidays. Still hard to believe he’s not with us. His death affected as large a cycling community as possible.

Rode my age in miles plus a few, again.



No one else showed up at the start of the ride.
