100 miles since 07:30 last Saturday morning. This calls for a day of rest. My month-old bike already has signs of wear and roadside repairs. I can't think of anything better to wear out than a bicycle. This is great! And what a reversal - women are following me around to look at MY legs.

Today’s ride: Met my friend Jim at 7:00 AM this morning at the San Sebastian Trail Head and we drone to Winter Garden and got on the West Orange Trail. It was about 7 miles to Kilarney Station where we picked up the South Lake Trail. After about 5 mile of small rolling hills we turned north towards Ferndale. The hills got a little longer and a little steeper and I was doing just fine with my 39/25 then we hit the wall and I didn’t have any more gears. Some will say this hill is one of the hardest in Florida and ranks right up there with Sugar Loaf. Well I walked the top half and my legs were spent. At the 20 mile mark we turned around and headed back. We stopped in Winter Garden for lunch at the Moon Cricket Café and had a great fish sandwich. After that we drove over to the Cat Trike factory and took the tour and did a test ride. Let me tell you if you have a mind to get a Trike the Cat Trike 700 is the one to get. Very fast and very comfortable top quality.

fun ride

From Teklanika to Polychrome Pass before the road opens to tourist traffic. Roughly 32miles round trip but a bit hilly. This fellow sat calmly as I rode by.

Just 8 miles today. I did some high cadence/high power intervals on one of the more shallow hills (3-4%) on the BRP.

Intended to do a 60+ km (40 miles) ride, but flatted at 25 km (15 miles). Found a hole in the sidewall of the tire as well as in the tube. Replaced the tube and took it easy on the way home on a shorter route. Ended up with 46.5 km (29 miles).

Club MTB ride. Good group of 9 riders, a mix of crusty old veterans, mid-level riders and a couple of newbies. I got in 11.5 miles and some good hill work.

I used to ride from the entrance to Wonder Lake without having to even think about it. Not so easy today but quite glad to still be taking pics at Sable with my bike. Beautiful weather but a good strong 20mph headwind on the way back. It's never a steady wind through the valley but I did my share of pedaling downhill which is always worth some cussing.

Bah.. too much rain this month .. 16 mile loop today which puts me at about 500 miles for the year since April and only 125 miles for this month because of all the rain. Between the bad weather and work I've only been getting out every four days so I'm really starting to think seriously about a trainer.

Had a spill when I hit a patch of sand/muck on the way back, the bike lands on the soft wet dirt so no harm there but I hit the pavement/sand on my butt resulting in matching road rash abrasions on my left elbow and knee. My bike, jacket and pants looked like I was in a cyclocross race. Once I got home, it was time to hose down the bike,.. make that two bikes and then myself. Once I got out of the shower and got dressed I came downstairs.. my wife looked at my scrapes and abrasions and says "Aren't you overdoing it ? You're not 16, your're 57."

"Uh, no.. I wasn't going that fast when I hit that patch...." (I wasn't.. really !).

Jeesh... overdoing it.

To add insult to injury, just as I was about to put some steaks on the grill, I bit into a soft chocolate chip cookie and a dental crown on one of my front teeth comes off for the third time in the last 18 months. Now I've got to get my dentist to glue it back on yet again.

Oh well, the bikes are nice and clean and I'm not covered in dirt/sand anymore..

It's Bike to Work Day. I did my morning commute of 17 hilly miles. I stopped by one of the Bike to Work pit stops and got some Clif bars and a red blinkie light.

Finally - a break from the rain. Did 10 miles in just my 3rd time out this year. My injured knee held up pretty well, but I still can't get out of the saddle.

Had an embarrassing clip incident at an intersection though. Ouch...

Cross training again today. Shoveling up gravel, raking wheelbarreling it out. raking. laying pavers. and wheelbarreling fine granite. I would rather be ridding for sure, But the decorative rock has to go. I cut a new Cont. 4000S sidewall the other day and I don't want to do that again. I will need some recover time after I finish with this project.

4 mile "semi-commute" to work after driving into town for Bike to Work Day. I think I'll take a detour on the way back to the car and do a few repeats on some nearby hills.

I wish I could bike to work but I'm retired. This week has rained and rained and then it rained some more. I don't mind riding in rain since I can be back home in half a day at most but a two or three hour ride requires at least 45 minutes of bike cleaning. In wet weather every bit of debris ridden over ends up stuck to the bike. In addition to ordinary debris, the grass along the bike path is growing thick and luxurious and the resident geese are delighted by this bounty. I believe most here are familiar with the expression 'as fast as grass through a goose'. This goose goop also ends up stuck to the bike. It's clear that this cycling business is way beyond mere enthusiasm and is in the land of compulsion. Anyway, I rode 30 miles or so and the sun made an appearance so all is good.

BTWD: co-led a group of about 25 folks on a 12 mile ride from a local park to a BTWD celebration downtown. More crowded this year than previously, by far!
Then rode another 5 miles to a city grade school where a couple hundred fellow employees of my hospital built a playground (as a Day of Service). Schlepped more mulch than you can shake a shredded stick at. And wheelbarrows of concrete, too. Then rode the 15 miles home.
