35-miler early today, before it got hot. Ambient temp was 84 when I got home. Heat index was 94. This was about 10 a.m. Next week I'll try leaving at dawn!

Only 13-ish miles between 8:15 and 9:30 this morning, but I still managed to get tired. Temps 80-85F, humidity 75-80%. My first ride since May 14th and I need that, too...

I rode 30 miles with five friends from the club. Nice day other than the heat and humidity, but it is July in Georgia.

I thought I was riding 55 miles on a club ride today, but the folks I ended up riding with were doing the 33 mile route, which I didn't figure out until we were heading back to the start/end point. I usually follow the Dan Henry's closely but this time I was following the crowd. No problem: One very challenging hill early on and lots of other hills on the ride so I got a good workout. Not enough hills around Indy thanks to the glaciers. South of Indy, where we were today, things start to get interesting in an up-and-down way.

50 fairly flat miles on the tandem this am. When I fed the horses at 0500 in a tee shirt it seemed warm enough, but we drove 25 miles north to the start and I don't think it was much over 50. Since I was wearing a short sleeve jersey only the first hour or so was pretty chilly. Still, nice to get in our last long ride prior to the Windmill Century (we're only doing 70-80 miles).

I re-joined the big local bike club which I've been a member of for a couple of years, because they now block the cue sheet library for non-paying folks. I've never been on any of the group rides, except for the big annual century ride which is open to everyone anyway.
So, since I paid my money, I decided to do one of the group rides in Maryland. It was a well-attended 68 mile ride, doing some of the same roads I was on last week when I rode the Civil War Century route:
https://connect.garmin.com/activity/97922474
The group had A, BB, and B classifications. I wasn't sure which group to go with (I knew I wasn't an "A"!!) so I went with the slowest "B" group. It was a pretty good fit, but I was the fastest of that group apparently. The A's, BB's, and B's left about 10 minutes apart, and I ended up catching a few of the "BB" folks. Next time I may see how I do with the BB group, if I do another group ride.

I’m fortunate to have a great riding partner and I’ve quickly built a new level of speed into my riding.
On Saturdays we start at 7:30 and take a 75 mile route from Chicago to Gurnee, IL. & back. Yesterday was the third week in a row for this ride. My riding partner is a twenty-something triathlete on a TT bike. I mostly follow on my anything-but-aero long-distance bike, a steel framed CX bike with road tires.
Yesterday we kept the average above 31 km/hour the entire trip, and were at 33 km/hour after 45 miles. This was my first time to hold a 20 mph average for more than two hours.
I’ve been a caregiver to my wife for the last six months and have only done about 1300 miles of riding so far this year. But I'm happy with my fitness and I’ve been keeping the pace near 20 mph for the last 500 miles and can hold that on longer rides now.

The rain last night/early this morning cooled things down this morning so I decided to go to the wilderness park near my house (MUP) and see how far I could go before it got too hot to ride. Expected to get there at 7 but ended up getting there at 8 instead. Nice weather, blue skies and low humidity. Temp in the upper 70's. Got in a half metric before it felt like someone turned the switch on to the giant oven. It got really hot really quick but I was on the last half of my last loop before I started noticing it. All in all a very good ride, it just got too damn hot.

65 miles this morning in the western suburbs around the Minnesota river/Lake Minnetonka. The group ride began with 7, but much of the ride was a simpatico foursome. It was HOT - 92°F - at least by local standards and we all felt somewhat wilted towards the end, though we mostly kept our pace up. There was a modest amount of climbing - 2500 feet. Personally, I am pleased to have put in back-to-back days above 50 miles and not feel like my legs are wasted. That's progress.

Rode in an organized ride that was pretty flat--62 miles with only 3000 ft of climbing. We averaged 24 mph the first hour. At that point I sat up to ride with some other friends that were behind me--still averaged 20 mph for the day. Great pizza afterwards!

I did a practice TT in preparation for the bike leg of the Tri Indy coming up in August. 2 laps of a 12.5 mile downtown loop. I wanted to reconnoiter the route and learn its bad spots, of which there were many. Bad pavement mostly, and a very rough, very shallow-angle RR crossing. And a fair bit of glass, but I'm hoping they'll have swept the course before we start.

I decided to run errands on the bike again today - post office and grocery. I finally used the grocery bag panniers I bought last year.
The panniers installed and ready to go.
I always use the short-cut through the cemetery when going to the post office.
This is the Old National Road (Route 40) that runs through town. The ride down to the post office is great but pedaling back up that incline is much slower
The panniers loaded and ready for the return home. I must have adjusted the load correctly as I didn't tip over
Note to myself: Go earlier in the day and skip the days when the temp is 97 with excessive heat warnings.

Today’s ride:
Good solo ride from the house to the northern trail head. While taking a water break my friend Jim rode up so we rode together back to Panera bread. I pulled about half of the way back and we were riding at 18 to 20 mph but when he took a turn at the front I could not hold on. Jim is tall and thin and rides a very top end Trek, so me at tall and a little heavy and riding an old steel bike I wasn’t too embarrassed. I could hold on, on the flats but the little inclines took a toll on my legs and lungs.
Ride statistics for: 07/11/2011
Miles today: 55+
Mileage this month May: 405+
Mileage this year: 5484+ (68.5 % of my 2011 goal)
Over/under riding days 2011 vs. 2010: +10
Over/under riding days July 2011 vs. July 2010: +1
Over/under miles 2011 vs. 2010: +1746 miles
Average miles per ride this month: 50.7
Average miles per ride this year: 42.8
Number of rides over 50 miles this month/total ride days this mo. 6/8
Metric Centuries this month: 2
Miles needed to hit my 2011 goal of 8,000: 2515 miles,
A 9/10 thousand mile year is not out of reach. I should reach my goal about mid October.
Tomorrows plan: 50+ mile ride with Dick Davidson weather permitting. I want to be at 500 miles by Thursday night.

More afternoon thunderstorms so I got rained out again. If it stops raining long enough for me to get the bike out of the storage building (I don't have a garage), I'll run some miles on the trainer. I'm taking tomorrow off from work for doctor's appointment and other errends, so a ride will definitely happen.

My husband and I did a very nice 18.6 mile ride after he got home from work this evening. It was still in the high 80's when we started, so we kept it leisurely.
