I just did the usual after-work 30 mile loop down to the capital. It was a beautiful night though, so I took this pic with my phone. Sure wish I had a real camera with me:

I rode 36 mi today on the Schuylkill River Trail near Valley Forge, Pa. This was my longest ride of the year, and also the coldest. There was a stiff breeze out of the northwest, which made for a tough return leg. Otherwise, the weather was gorgeous, with bright sunshine, deep blue sky, and wispy white clouds. It was really pretty riding along the Schuylkill River.

Oh, I almost forgot--there is a brief section on the trail close to the trailhead where I enter it, in which there are fields on both sides of the trail. As I started to ride through this section, a red fox darted across the trail right in front of me. It was a beautiful animal and quick as greased lightning. He dived into the high grass in the field to my right and was gone in an instant.

I set out to ride about a 30 mile loop. At 20 miles in, I stopped by a pond and had something to eat. When I got back on the bike, it was a long uphill and the bottom bracket started grinding like it had rocks in it. I had to call home for a rescue mission, the bike is at the LBS now. Should have it back by Wednesday. I took a picture at the pond, just before the bike broke on me.

It was still a nice day, better than staying home!

Rode 10 miles Wednesday and Saturday
in the sub-freezing coolness.
Replaced my Sakae pedals on the
Nishiki with Sylvan MKS,
and enjoyed a great ride.
The pond near me froze !

After resting on a sub-freezing Saturday, I rode 55 miles in 30-40f with sunny weather on Sunday. I felt lucky to be riding at all during mid-December, and here I was on my road bike with zero snow or ice on the ground.

A 10-20 mph headwind during the return trip felt extra strong due to all the layers. The last 15 miles were really hard work.

Wife/stoker surprised me by suggesting a ride this afternoon - so, after she finished making chocolate chip-mint cookies, we took the Screamer out for a 12 mile ride. Win-win!
Sunny, almost 40F and no wind.

23 miles today. Started out at 35°F(with low humidity and a blustery wind making it feel like 27°) and ending at 42°(35°F with wind chill). I had the misfortune of the wind blowing in just the right direction so that 85% or more of my ride I had some sort of head wind or cross, head wind. Slowed me way down--it was a chilly ride.

No one can accuse me of not being dedicated.

I did a very relaxed 29 miles in sunny but chilly weather. I haven't ridden my bike in a couple of weeks; it was good to get outside.

33 Flat miles on the tandem - our 1/week ride due to my business travel, but it is great to be employed in my dotage. Did get to do 15 miles yesterday on the Volagi with some climbing.

I rode 33 miles with a friend over one of the usual club routes, just he and I. Lots of climbing, some fun descents, but all done at a much more relaxed pace than the usual club pace. The weather threatened rain, but we stayed dry for the ride. Wonderful breakfast after!

I got 26 is today using my son's Trek 7.2 FX. First time I've ridden it. Pretty nice bike, but if it was mine I'd change out the saddle real quick. Last time my son came over to ride he left the bike here, and my old Trek mountain bike had a breakdown earlier this week.

Did a nice out and back 32 miler with the full fenders, as it was a steady drizzle the whole time, and about 35 degrees. Saw a grand total of 5 other riders on the trail enjoying the rain. None of them had fenders...

All 10 of us on the club ride this morning are fifty plus. We rode suburban streets of Woodridge, Lisle, and Naperville. Thirty-nine degrees and heavy overcast skies, a real "gift" for 13 December. Thirty-two miles at an average speed of 14.7.

Hilly 25 mile zone 3+ ride this morning; basically my wife once again asked me to kick her ass, and I did my best to oblige. Good times.

Today’s ride:

12/14/2011 42+ miles

Rode with my friends Jim and John to Sugar Loaf Mt. today. This area is known for about 7 very tough climbs like The wall, The Momma and The Poppa, Buckhill and Cherry Lake, Hospital Hill and a couple of others. This is the general area where the Horrible Hundred is held every year. Well I made it up the wall on the way out (I had to walk it the last time),then came Sugar Loaf, considered by many the toughest climb in Florida. The first part of Sugar Loaf is the hardest IMO about 14% grade then it tapers off to about 12 % grade. I made it over that first section but my legs were cooked so I stopped and took a break, then started to walk the rest of it. I walked about 10 yards and decided that waking was going to be as tough as riding so I climbed back on the bike and rode the rest of it. Needless to say I was only doing about 3-4 mph but it was faster than walking.

On the way up Sugar Loaf we had a guy that was riding a fixed gear, it was depressing to watch him ride out of sight, although I must mention that he had about 31 fewer years on his legs than I have (but a fixed gear). I turned around at the top and started down, at 35 mph I started to wonder how bad it would hurt if I crashed so I started applying the brakes. I have gone faster than that but I was a lot younger and more daring then. I was feeling pretty good about myself until we got back to the Wall a second time. For me that climb really separated the men from the weaklings today, I fall into the weakling category. I made it about half way up but that was it and I had to walk the rest. It was still a long ride back to the car and there were some pretty good rollers but I got over them even if it was a bit slow.

We stopped in downtown Winter Garden and had a great lunch at The Moon Cricket. Johns Garmin said that we had burned about 8,000 calories so I didn’t feel bad at all about ordering the fried fish sandwich. Now I am known around town for the high mileage that I ride but it is all on flat ground and believe me when I tell you high mileage is no training for even Florida’s hills.

Almost forgot to mention that we encountered some 21 mph wind gusts today. Just thought I would through that in.

Finally

Given the weather, my wife's medical appointments, etc., etc., it has been a couple of weeks without riding. So, I got in about 20 miles today - the trail was plowed, and just a couple of icy spots.

Mid 40's, sunny.

Great fun.
