Finaly the weather has changed here and I was able to do the first real nice sunny spring ride of the year. Complete with sunglasses and in my new summer-cycling gear from Jartazi; nice
Went with my pal (former racer) and we did 25 miles (41km) in 90 minutes.
Parts we took it relatively easy- side by side chitchat mode- and some parts we would ride behind each other and went for it. (no idea how its called when the first rider keeps the second one out of the wind)
I was able to set some (Strava) PR's; the one I'm proud of the most is where we attacked the Tempelberg (not a real mountain but a steep bridge over a canal) We are now 2nd (my bikecompanion) and 5th (me) of 134 cyclists who rode this segment.
All in all I had a lot of fun; not one minute I was bored so this kind of rides may be the key to enjoy cycling to the fullest for me.

The wife and I road the trail that loops around Lunken Airport on the east side of Cincinnati. We did just two loops (10 miles) because we got started a bit late. This was her first time there and while she liked it, it doesn't compare to the Little Miami Scenic Trail we usually do. My son and I did the Lunken trail this past Thursday which was also his first time there.
Back around 1964 or 65 my dad took my brother and I there when we were maybe 10 or 11. We did not have a car at the time so it involved two different bus routes to get there. Once there he would rent us bikes and we would set off on the same trail. This one trip would be an all day event, catch the bus at 10:00 am, home about 5:00 or 6:00 pm. My dads been gone since '79 but riding with my son on Thursday and my wife today made it feel like it was just yesterday. While I was 10 or 11 at the time my son is 25 but, I hope he has good memories of our rides together some day (far, far away). I wasted so many bike years working or even worse being a couch potato.

37 miles on the flat lands of Florida, preceded by an hour in the pool (50M lanes are great). I miss the hills here but not much else.

Yup, nice 27 miles in scenic Chester County. Got passed up a hill by a guy on a tribike, met up with him later at an intersection and we chatted about the scenery and benefits of biking. He does low 20's, out of my league but I do get better each time I ride those rollers. The Domane 6 wih Di2 is fab, and makes me want to ride!

27 local bike path miles this afternoon. 79° S Wind 23 mph gusts to 29 mph. For some reason that south wind was taking it right out of me. Even the down wind leg on the way home was a struggle.
Its only pain

I was looking for an easyish wind-down ride in the MD countryside, but I forgot how hilly it would be. Ended up doing 66 miles with just about 6000 feet of climbing. All up and down and up and down. Still some beautiful countryside though.

A Tale of Two Rides
I had two rides this weekend that were very different from each other and very different from my normal rides. I have been riding to stay healthy and get in shape, and have done a number of Century and Metric Century rides. Most of my other rides have been getting ready for these rides.
On Sunday, I took my son, daughter-in-law, wife and grandson (in a trailer) out for a ride. We covered a total of 15 miles in over 4 hours - the same amount of time it takes me to do a century. We we stopped for parks, for ducks playing in the water, for planes taking off over head, for meal breaks. It was a great ride, particularly to see everyone have fun on a bicycle. Grandson has recently learned how to say "bye-bye" and greeted everyone we passed with that. Don't let anyone say that roadies are rude.
On Monday I headed out for a group ride with the expectation that I would get to get a good workout going up some steep hills. Instead I met up with a fellow rider who hasn't been out much due to significant health issues. The rest of the group was anxious to hit it hard, and I wanted to spend some time with this friend so we let them take off and we peddled and talked We ended up going about 30 miles - no hills, but some good breezes, and a great chance to catch up.
I learned this weekend that sometimes you ride to live, sometimes you live to ride.

Usually on Memorial day a friend and I do the capital city trail around Madison, Wi. and then hit the Bratfest. Due to the uncertainty of the weather my friend bailed. Later in the day I went for a walk and then rode 13+ miles on the local rail trail. Saw a number of indigo buntings and cardinals which more than made up for the general gloominess of the day, week.

Still waiting for the shoes(probably get here Friday). Still practicing the unclipping motion--not the same as the real thing, but trying to make the motion a habit.

I've been singing with the Harmonium Choral Society for ten years. I'm moving out of New Jersey this summer, so I won't be able to sing with them any more. The regular rehearsals are way out in Mendham, so I drive there every week. I've always thought about riding there but never had the time or the gumption to do it, since I'd be coming back a long way in the dark.
This past Sunday was my last chance. Our last concerts of the season are this coming weekend. The weather was beautiful but very windy.
The terrain was beautiful but hilly, and it's mostly uphill. I was running late, so I rode really really hard, against the wind and up the hills.
Coming back, I was tired, but traffic was light, my bike is very well lit, and drivers were very courteous.
It was 42 miles round trip, and I'm glad I did this special ride.

Don't mince words
I rode Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Had a 50 miler tandem ride planned for Memorial Day, but it was uncommonly cool & drizzly. We went to see "Ironman 3" instead.
So I went out for a quick ride this morning and there was so little wind it felt like I had a tailwind the entire time. Fun!

If you don't like wind stay out of the Great Plains!
79° S Wind 32 mph gusting to 39 mph.
I managed 17 miles on the local bike paths. As usual there was less than 200 ft. of climbing.
Oh well! It's where I live so it's where I ride.

I got in 20.5 miles into that same wind. The first six miles due south which just about killed me.

MetroBoston, DownEast Division. We're in Acadia Natl Park. Rode the Park Loop Road today, 16 miles, 1200 ft of climbing. It was supposed to shower a little. Instead it rained hard most of the route. It's still raining. We still had a great time.

23 miles on the road. At my slowest I was doing 5.6mph going up a hill. Going down the other side I hit 46.7mph much sweeter! Its one of those hills that I turn off my HRM bcause its annoying to hear the alarms.

Doctors office with a cystoscopy this morning. Not fun and a bit too uncomfortable to ride after the procedure. I'll pick up the riding tomorrow.
