Evening club ride, a Thursday ritual

Yes I did. I took The King out for his weekly exercise. Name changed from "The Roadster" to "His Majesty, King of Bikes", or simply "The King". Why? Well, just look at him!

Here's an angle I've used before with different bikes, but The King looks best here:

We did a nice 20 mile loop around the neighborhood. The sun was low, so most of the route was in shade, and I had to rely on that poor old incandescent lamp on the front for the last few miles. It lights up the reflective street signs, but doesn't do much to illuminate the road. But at least motorists see me better with it on.

18 miles Thursday night, to and from the grocery store with a stop inside to shop and cool off awhile. My legs felt better after a few days rest. Chest is clearing up after a few days with a respiratory bug. Maybe I've been overdoing it this summer, trying to ride every day or every other day.

Nice pics, nice bike!

Got rained out yesterday on the ride the wife and I started. Got about 1/2 mile of riding. I was going to do a solo ride this morning because the right knee is still sore from Wednesday's crash. Met my friend Wendell in the parking lot so we took off and did a moderately paced 16-18 mph pace ride. Tried doing a sprint on the last three miles but the knee could only take about a mile of 20-21 mph speeds. The knee came through pretty good, except for that sprint, so tomorrow I'll go a little farther than today's 33 miles and see how it does on a longer distance.

Weselfs 08-05-16 10:26 AM

Yep: 62 miles on 3 hours sleep. Now for zzzzzzzzs. :)

What happened to the photos?

24.3 today on the Roubaix. Won that ebay auction for a set of Fulcrum 5 wheels (for the Tarmac) so I'm a happy camper. Went out an hour early, 56° 7AM, fingers and arms got cold. Refreshing change from the 98° weather later in the day.

Oops, sorry - I took them out of the p-bucket and replaced them with better quality shots.

While the gang is still recovering from the crash, I went and did a really enjoyable 29 mile ride with the wife this morning. It was slow and steady and at her pace.

I want to be strong when I go to Canada but im afraid with only two or three weeks before I go I doubt it. Ill keep you informed on my progress///I enjoy reading you bikers training regimens so pease tell me what yer doing.Kenneth

Hi Ken,

I am so encouraged at your progress. I'm 63, just found a good buy on a used Hardrock 2 days ago. I haven't done anything else yet. I need to buy a helmet and have procrastinated. First time in a couple of years, I rode a bike a few weeks ago. When I did, I ended up with a very, sore tailbone after only riding 1.4 miles. I think I am afraid of injury, so, the procrastination.

I've learned a lot about adjustments to the seat, and did that, also height in comparison to the handlebars etc. I think I might need a softer seat, but I'm finding it hard (no pun intended) to get out and try a ride. When I test-rode the HR before I bought it, the tailbone thing I could feel again. I've never had an injury there or arthritis etc. I just think it's my saddle. Expense is a big thing for me since I am a lower-income senior living on my SSI, so I don't want to buy another seat until I'm sure I need it.

I just have to bite the bullet and go for a ride today, and see how I feel with the new adjustments. If it still hurts, they have cushioned saddles for not too much at Walmart. I know people recommend spending more, but I don't have it this month.

I felt I needed to share how I was feeling because it's really been a wonderful dream to start cycling on a regular basis. I am in good shape, walk 16-24 miles a week, do strength-training using body-weight exercises. I think I have to get over the fear is all. Sore is one thing, and I don't have actual pain. All I have to overcome is the fear of another ride making it worse. No osteo, or anything like that either. I'm just going to quit whining and go do it today. If I get worried out there I'll just stand up and pedal, I can do that with no pressure on my behind at all:lol:

Greybeard712 08-06-16 12:02 PM

I'm averaging 120 miles a week riding every morning so I decided to give the saddle sores a rest. Dusted off the trike :recum: and rode for 18.2 miles. It's an enjoyable beast.

54 miles this morning on a club ride that preceded the Mass Ave Crit in Indy. From downtown out to rural areas to the southwest and back. Then, watched some racing, ate some pizza and rode home.

I did it, road my new-to-me Hardrock for 1.5 miles in 15 minutes, and realized I just needed to move the seat back a bit. I had not pressure on my tailbone, and had a great "short" but happy ride:) I am new as you may guess, hadn't rode for years pretty much.

I am chompin at the bit to go further, but I am trusting those that have helped me since I joined here about a week ago, and takin baby-steps. I can't help but be excited about my short ride since I wasn't convinced a little adjustment to the seat/saddle (learning the lingo) could "cure" my issue, but so happy to learn it did:)

Super nice, can't say much but "wow", you got everything on there but the kitchen sink. I didn't miss that did I:lol:I hope to add something here and there as I go, just started though, and I do have a bottle holder, very important:p

36 last night at 16.3 mph (hilly), Saturday 27 miles at 17.7 mph, then a 5k at 8:04

Excellent steed :thumb: :thumb: but don't see the chain oiler like mine had???? or did that come in later years? :foo:

10 miles tonight, after sunset. Still hot. That time of year when it doesn't cool off at night until the wee hours. Taking it easier until some heat rash heals. And saving energy for a longer ride Sunday.

OldTryGuy 08-07-16 06:15 AM

Friday night I got out 9:15pm for a 15 miler on the grocery grabber. Temperature was still mid 80F's and humidity up there since we had a shower go through a bit earlier.

Yesterday was not much nicer than Friday night. Left house 7:40AM for a warm then HOT 82 miles after the sun made its appearance. The LBS ride was a spirited 39 miles and averaged 22.6mph with no stopping. A couple of times the YOUNGER guys slowed things down to 22mph so I passed up the paceline and upped it to 25mph then pulled out. Off the bike this week and hoping the legs will be fresh for a bit more speed come Saturday.

Greybeard712 08-07-16 12:01 PM

It's been a bit cool in the early mornings (mid 60s) so I bought a cool looking long sleeved X-Men jersey on ebay ($11.88). Unfortunately I didn't read all the description - no elastic on the cuffs/bottom and no pockets. But it's a nice shirt, black with orange and silver piping. A small fanny pack suffices for carrying ID, keys, and stuff. It warmed up quickly, however, got a little warm. 19.1 miles on the Tarmac.

I got to do a solo ride instead of our usual tandem ride. So I took the Gazelle out. Ended up with 67.5miles, so I did my age (but missed on the fractional part).

Cut it short at 22 miles when a rainstorm rolled in, a disappointment since I've skipped two weekends for one reason or another. Checking the forecast now, every day next week through Saturday predicts thunderstorms  I'll have to be satisfied with short commutes on my rain bike.

JanMM 08-07-16 04:12 PM

51 Screamer miles on a mostly-but-not-completely flat club ride this morning. 14.4mph average which is a bit faster than our tandem norm.

I rode 12 miles today, and met some cyclers from Sweden, New York, and Alaska! I had an awesome time and love my new-to-me bike:) I imagine I'll be sore but it was just to wonderful to stop, so I took a few pics, and we had 70 degrees, and a nice breeze. Here's a shot of the fellers I met, and a shot of the beach-drive (one of my fave spots around here:
