44 miles Wednesday evening, between a group ride and the ride to and from home. First ride since Sunday. Still needing a day or two of rest between longer rides for my back and neck, but enjoying it.

40 very windy miles with my buddy Steve this morning. It was a very somber ride after finding out that the park regular, that we both knew, that was air lifted to the hospital passed away last night from severe brain injuries. He was wearing his helmet and it was still on him when the group of people he was with came to his aid. There weren't many scratches on the helmet and it was intact, so he must have struck his head on the pavement just right. We'll all miss seeing him come out and ride each day. Sad story.

20 miles as a Bike Commuter today. First morning commute when I wasn't tempted to remove my jacket/vest halfway to work. Maybe it really is Fall.

More windy miles - 51 to be exact. Rode with my buddy Steve who wanted to beef up the pace in preparation for a century he signed up for, the first weekend of November. I don't think he'll make it. Around mile 40, he was worn out and around mile 46 he was done. Thought we were going to have to walk the bikes back to the parking lot but he was able to stay on the bike for the last 6 miles.

Yes, it's been windy up here in Gainesville, FL too for over a week. Today I got 30 miles in, averaging just over 18 mph. I've been fighting a cold which has cut down on my cycling time somewhat, and next Saturday is the Gainesville Santa Fe event. I'm going to ride hard through Tuesday, and see how I feel on Saturday. I'll either do the 55 or 68 mile loop........

62 miles from Gainesville to just west of Fanning Springs. I left early this AM, and it was cold and clammy in shorts and T shirt. I made two quick stops, and again it was breezy on the way back. Averaged just under 18 mph, so I'm feeling pretty confident about the upcoming Santa Fe event next weekend. I think I can get the 68 loop without killing myself.

I plan to ride through Tuesday, then relax until Sat. I have noticed an improvement in my speed, but I'm not quite ready for the century.

Rode a total of 23 miles along Longboat Key on a relatively cool morning ( 74F at 8.00 am), but not without incident: at the 15 mile point, not far from our house, I slowed our Cannondale T2 tandem to stop at a red light and changed down ready for the restart only to feel the drive chain jam. I hadn't realized I was in the big chainring and had changed onto the biggest rear sprocket. The chain was not long enough to accommodate the range and jammed taught. I vaguely remember ( I am 76!) changing out the cassette some time ago for a wider range and had obviously not checked that the chain was long enough. Anyway, it was a short walk to our house, where we hopped onto our Comotion and continued to the coffee stop to meet up with the rest of the gang, then completed the ride. The T2 chain has now been lengthened!

32 miles today, preparing for tomorrow's fall colors ride. Fuji 3-Speed Roadster Conversion is ready for some light touring and photography now. It took awhile to find the right set-up, but persistence paid off.

Only 7 miles Saturday to stretch my legs and run some errands. First ride since a 36 mile ride Wednesday. Needed a couple of days off to rest the neck and back. Still need to make some adjustments to the rigid fork mountain bike before it's comfortable enough for longer rides.

40 miles early Sunday AM to get in the last few rides before next weekend's event in Gainesville. I gotta rethink the pre-ride oatmeal as it's giving me heartburn about 20 miles in. And I'm still feeling the effects of a cold, not easily shaken. Finally, I'm noticing an intermittent noise from the Domane, I think it's the rear cog or possibly the bottom bearing...

Ok, done complaining. In the plus side, I'm over 18 mph, endurance is up, and most important of all, I'm having fun!

Yesterday - a 32 mile club ride with HOOTS (Hoosiers Out On Tandems). Followed by a pitch-in meal. Unseasonably warm weather.

We haven't seen 70 all month and likely won't until April.

A beautiful but very windy day and a 58 mile ride with the gang. Seems like the wind just gets worse every day.

What's with the wind here in FL? I can't recall such a persistent stretch, or maybe I'm just out more...58 in those conditions is commendable. I'm still reeling from yesterday!

I wish I knew! Tuesday's are usually my first ride day of the week (Mondays off) and I can get a decent pace in the wind down here. But by Sunday, the legs are pretty much non-cooperative and I'm lucky to get a 15 mph average on a 50 mile ride. I had a 265 mile ride week through Saturday, so yesterday was not a very fast ride, overall.

Thanks, Jim. It looks like the Boston area is peaking right now as well. It must be beautiful there, especially near the ocean.

The sun did not cooperate for our Fall Colors Ride yesterday. It played hide-n-seek in the cloud cover all day, so that the beautiful shot you decide to stop for is gone by the time you get set up. I've got to find a camera strap that I can wear while riding, so I can stop, point, and shoot in rapid succession.

Here's the only one I liked from amongst several shots attempted:

That's my riding buddy Ian with his Soma Saga touring rig. We managed a 15 mph pace for 34 miles (Ian's Soma sports a computer) along the Hardwood Creek and Sunrise Prairie rail trails. Stopped for a magnificent breakfast at a place called "Village Inn" in Wyoming, MN. I ordered the "Southwest Chicken Fajita Crepes" - simply because it defied my imagination, and I had to see and taste it for myself. The Monterey Jack Hollandaise was incredible, and the crepes-for-tortilla substitution worked better than it had any right to. Vive la TexMex?

We rode 29.8 miles today a little quicker than usual. Seems like speeds have been coming up a bit lately, but still shy of what I used to ride an Flat Florida.
I have more climbing just to get out of my neighborhood than I used to see n a 30 mile ride in Fla.
