Still cold and windy, semi-moderate today, nasty tomorrow and Thursday for Reno/Sparks. It won't start warming up until Sunday. Still I did 19.1 miles (30.7k) on the Roubaix. I may (or may nawt) cowboy up for tomorrow's 35mph gusts.

Today after work, I am going home and pull the Trek 520 out and show her some love with a 20 mile ride. I have been on her in a year.

26 WINDY miles, what a surprise..Several months back I made a comment that one VA mile (in the hills of the BlueRidge) is the equivalent of three in FL. Under these conditions, of which there appears to be no end, I officially retract that statement.

Sunday I rode the 50-mile route of the Tour de Staten Island with 3 friends. Adding the distance from and to home, my total for the day was 69 miles. This is the longest ride I've done in a few decades, I hadn't ridden much over 35 miles. I felt great and we all had a great day. Mental myths shattered.

53 windy miles Tuesday afternoon/evening. Hadn't planned on riding that far. Intended to tackle a hilly 20-30 mile route, but the wind was a steady 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph, and worse out that direction over the open prairie. So at the 7 mile mark I turned around and headed the opposite direction. The wind was still strong out of the south, but the alternate route was mostly in the river valley and sheltered by trees, so it was easier to handle.

Had to estimate the mileage. GPS signal kept dropping out after the midway point, but it was 26.something miles to the turnaround, so 53 total seems about right.

I need to get in a couple more long rides and get myself psyched up for a standard century. Probably gonna go solo just to get that out of the way (in case I wimp out), then try to schedule another soon with friends.

I've never understood why people always say that riding in hills is harder than riding in Florida? I guess they've never really ridden in our wind that much or at all.

The Weather Channel showed wind speeds of 3-4 mph this morning up until around noon. I thought we would get a reprieve for a day. It was almost as bad as yesterday. I got in 40 miles with my riding buddies but we fought for every mile, especially the last 15.

Simply gorgeous afternoon/early evening ride. Low humidity, mid high 70's and NO WIND! 40 very enjoyable miles on cruise control. Gosh, does riding give me a sense of empowerment! I swear I become one with the bike. It's days like this that make me feel blessed.

Going to heat up to the mid 90's, still with low humidity. Bring it!

Weather Underground web site predicted 15mph wind (gusts to 30) for 9AM Wednesday so I didn't ride, the winds didn't show up until almost noon. I missed a nice riding day. They predicted heavy winds for today, I rode–in heavy (cold) wind 12.7 miles (20.4k). Same for tomorrow but the weekend should be nice.

Another yesterday except we rode 50 mile instead of 40. Only had a few times when the wind calmed down, otherwise, it was 20+ mph wind from around 9:00 on. Looks like the temps are going to start reaching the 90's soon so I guess ride times will have to start at 0700. That should also give me an hour of low to no wind.

I'm posting in anticipation of my scheduled 40 miler later today. Yesterday I wished for the heat and humidity - and boy is it here. Temps are in the low 90's. BUT.....those dang winds are still with us (15+), so it's going to be a real convection oven of a ride. Bringing lots of on-board water.......

The prize at the end of the tunnel is my backyard pool which I haven't even used yet. I got it specifically for this purpose, and I'm jumping right off the bike and into it when I return. Yippee!!

18 miles this morning on a "Gelato Ride" with the gals of the Thursday Ladies Bike Ride. A bit foggy, a bit cool (low, low 60s) so all of except one were in cycling jackets, but by the time we got to the gelato place the sun was doing its best to break through the heavy overcast. Sadly, the gelato place was closed (for some unknown reason ), but the smoothie place a few doors down was open for business. The nice young clerk even took a group pic of us all holding our smoothies up high. One of the gals had a flat on the way back, but it was easily fixed.

Then I had to rush home and get my horse ready to go riding with an endurance friend and a young companion this afternoon. Sun was finally out, heat was up to about 80. We did 11 miles, almost all at a trot. Got back in good time for the young companion to get home, cleaned up, and head to evening classes.

So that's 29 miles today riding. My right knee was a bit cranky by the time I got off the saddle, but it calmed down as I did the barn chores. Now enjoying the cool evening breezes outside with my feet up...and the sun disappearing behind the mountains. Rain is moving in....

20 miles Thursday evening, mostly loafing around to stretch my legs and not fight the wind. But I couldn't resist taking another crack at the Top 10 for a Strava segment along this route. It's mostly downhill, with only a slight uphill grade for a few hundred yards, heading north, and the wind was from the south at 15-20 mph. Perfect for loafing into the Top 10 on this little-known segment. I've managed an 8th and 10th place this month.

But it won't last. My best times are 19.5 mph. The guy with the KOM did 33 mph. And now that the road is officially open (it's been barricaded for construction, but a few of us rode it anyway), I'm betting my 8th and 10th places will be properly dropped to 537th place within a year. There are many much faster riders than I in this area.

But it was hilarious having my name in the Top 10 for a few minutes, under the name of one of the fastest guys in the area (a really good fellow, too).

My Wind Alert app was showing 17 mph gusts at 9:00 am and going up from there. Met my buddy Frank and, after yesterday's ride, neither of us wanted to fight the winds again today. In an unusual move for Frank, he suggested we keep it around 15-16 mph on the loop and around the same in the subdivision. So that's what we did for our 40 mile ride.

You're a braver man than I, John_V. I had a hard time with 8-10mph headwinds @15mph the past few days. Guess I am a Wind Wimp.

19.8 miles (31.9k) in a cold north wind. 7 months of cold, enough already!

17 mph winds? Ouch! No wind at all here, but unseasonably warm. 93 F at the end of the 32 mile ride! Hosed the Domane off thoroughly afterwards. Gonna be hot tomorrow, so going out early.

Out at 7:30 this AM to beat the heat and wind, which I mostly did, but very heavy humidity as I set out. Wonderful 40 miles, nice to see so many smiling cyclists out so early. 19+mph average roundtrip, affirming that our winds normally slice several mph off my pace. Oh well.

Afterwards, took the Domane in to Gator Cycle to have them look at a rattle it's developed, which they believe is the Ultegra Di2 junction box. Also needs a chain (my slow cadence is a chain killer!) and IsoSpeed coupling bearings. Waaaah!!

Wind table from my Wind Alert app for this morning (below). We went extra early this morning hoping the wind would hold off a while but it didn't seem to happen. We did get some reprieve on the second lap on the loop so we took advantage of it and did the 4 mile, north loop at 19-20 mph before we hit a brick wall again. 40, hard fought miles today.

I rode down a group this morning, injured (left knee) and apparently a bit out of shape.

https://www.strava.com/activities/963013460

Torn left knee cartilage and pulled tendons from a fall. TKR is the only solution, maybe this Winter if I can wait that long. Not enough cartilage left to sew together and none behind the knee cap at all. Turmeric helps a lot!

Just a quick 7.60 mile ride to Deep Run Park from my house. I have a million things to do today, but managed to sneak in a quick ride out 'n back in 29:05. Incredible temps already here in Richmond, Virginia!! It's almost 90° already and this is the end of April!

I stopped along Raintree Dr on the way to the park...

Once inside the park, I stopped at the new Rec Center that was recently built.

And lastly, I stopped by one of the small fishing ponds inside Deep Run Park.

Still cold and windy. 21.3 miles (34.3k) but sunny. It's supposed to warm up into the 70s (low 50s in the morning) next week. This has been a much longer winter than the previous 3 years. I might even be able to wear shorts by mid May.

34 miles Friday, including a leisurely Critical Mass ride. Very pleasant but my legs felt like mush so I'm taking a day or two off. I don't usually ride consecutive days but did a few times the past couple of weeks, especially tackling some more challenging routes.
