10 fun miles with the wonderful ladies group this morning. We all had such a blast. Temps were at 90° with some profound humidity by the end of the ride, so after stopping reroute home to do some roadside litter pickup (so that our lovely 16 mile rural road remains all spiffy clean for the many urban and suburban cyclists that come out to ride "in the countryside" every weekend), a nap in the AC was on the afternoon to-do list. One of my collies decided to join me on the bed - we both slept like we were dead for an hour. Tomorrow my bike gets a rest and my mare and I will enjoy a relaxed 5 mile ride together.

60 miles on a clear blue sky 70° Just a few miles from home I came across a crowd of bike racers taking off once every minute on a 4 mile time trial on a road up into the mountains. Only a racer would be outside on

52 Miles. Cloudy but warm day. Strong headwind out that helped on the return. Some ass hole in a giant motor home pulled out in front of me from a stop sign and would have hit me or run me off the road if I didn't slam on my breaks as hard as I could. I was doing over 20 in the bike lane, with the right of way in a 25 mph zone. I passed him 2 blocks later where he was stuck at a busy stop sign, but I didn't want to get loud and irate at him so I kept on going. Soon later I got a flat on my rear tire I was shocked to find about 5 places where the thread was showing, I inspected it well last week. 2450 miles on a Michelin Pro 4 Service Course. It was an $20 tire that lasted longer than I expected. I liked it because though it was marked 25 mm it measured 26 mm. It was hard to get through the break pads whenever I removed or installed it. I didn't want to put a new tube in a worn tire so I used a Park glueless patch that is probably well over 6 years old. Never used one before. It got me home. I was a little worried because I had to ride 34 mph down into a narrow river canyon to have enough speed to help me climb up the other side of the canyon with a 90° turn at the bottom. Didn't know if the patch would hold or how the tire inflated to 50 psi would handle on the sharp high speed turn at the bottom of the hill. I have a new gator skin to replace it with that will match the front tire. Back to 25 mm front and rear.

Yeah, the mountains on the far right are the 3 sisters. The middle one is hidden behind the North one. To the left, is Broken Top. It blew 10,000 years ago and is responsible for the dry dusty top soil in the surrounding area. To the far left, is Mt. Bachelor, famous for the large ski resort on it. I live 9 miles due East of Mt. Bachelor. A long hard ride up lots of steep grades. I only ride up there in the Summer. It's very beautiful up here. I can see the mountains most of the time on my rides.

After yesterday's 50 miles and a 3 hour drive home, today's ride was later in the day. Nice to start in the warmth of the day - 63*F, and finish 25 miles only a few degrees cooler.

It's been getting into upper 80F's AND windy. No different yesterday but since wife is gone until late Sunday I decided on a "thru the night and AM ride" beginning at 6:45pm yesterday. Got in a slow-non stop 145 miles in by 4AM then took a much needed pit stop break plus shower, some eats and bike switch. Took my time as I didn't want to re-start in the dark so out again at 7:40 to the LBS for the AM ride. They dusted me off in no time flat so I just solo-ed some more for another 57 miles. A nice palindrome 202 miles.

Longest 2018 ride to date: 50 tandem miles on a club ride in Bartholomew and Brown counties. And, one of the hilliest rides that we do on a semi-regular basis.

Doing a little catch up here. Rode 40 miles on Wednesday and 30 on Thursday. Day 1 of the MS150 was yesterday and was a bit disappointing. I had my heart set on doing the century with two of my teammates but little sleep and some not so nice winds pretty much ended that idea. Did 50 miles and was feeling pretty good at the end. Decided to get something to eat and go back out for another 20-30 miles but I made the mistake of lying down on the bed in the hotel room and ended up waking up at 3:00 pm. If it wasn't raining, I would have gone out again. This morning was the second day of the MS150. Severe thunderstorms pretty much ended any chances of riding today. Those of us that brought our spouses at least had our vehicles with us to go home with. Those that didn't had to do the ride in the inclement weather and return to the starting place in order to get to their vehicles.

The other day the weatherman said the month of April was the 4th coldest on record since 1904. But May feels like it's rapidly heading into Summer with temps in the 80's.
I got in 100 minutes today in between all the rain and storms.

13 local miles today, with one modest hill. Kind of windy, though, which made things interesting intermittently.

Only one ride this weekend. Dadgum neck pain flared up Friday night and kept me in bed most of Saturday. Felt better Sunday, rode 50 miles with a new-to-me shorter quill stem -- 90mm to replace the original 120mm. Huge improvement. Better balanced, much more comfortable on my neck, feels more efficient because my weight is over the pedals on climbs rather than stretched out. I should have done this months ago.
I'd heard some claims that a significantly shorter stem can feel twitchy, especially on fast descents, but it felt fine to me.

Since I didn't ride the 50 mile, MS return yesterday, I decided to do a makeup ride today. It was hotter today than it was Saturday and the winds were a bit stronger but at least there was no chance of rain. I tried to keep the pace and times as close to Saturday's ride as I could and ended up being a few seconds over one minute difference. A nice 50 mile makeup ride.

Hot and dry, winds from the north knocked a few mph off the return from a 32 mile jaunt. Amazing how strong the sun is even at 7:30.

55 Miles
55 Miles beautiful day 77°,blue skies, good roads and beautiful scenery. I left home early and rode a lot faster than usual so I could get to the store before they closed. I rode the same rout as Saturday and was a whole 2 minutes faster. But somehow I rode 3 miles further. Made it to the store with plenty of time, but my order wasn't ready. I will have to go back tomorrow. It's going to rain, so I won't want to ride.

32 mi RT commute mostly gravel/limestone paths. Beautiful day. I had two close calls. I was riding some rutty path and wasn't paying attention and ended up in a rut a bit wider than by tire with gravel in it at about 16 mph. Luckily I was able to keep control. The other is I had to cross a busy intersection that has a cross walk for both bikes and pedestrians. Almost got nailed by a car coming the opposite direction turning right. She actually floored it then slammed on the brakes (I was over 1/.2 way through). I am going to try my headlight in flashing mode in daylight during my ride home. I don't think it would have helped today though. I think the driver saw me and just decided they would gun it to get past me and save a couple of seconds and then realized they would hit me. Not the first time at this intersection.

20 miles Tuesday morning, second time fasting -- just coffee. Felt pretty good. Was worried I'd bonk but so far it's been fine. Just following the tutorials that emphasizing staying below threshold. Even with that I still set a new PR on a 5 mile loop -- not fast by local standards, but faster for me. Intended to ride farther but had a flat, decided to call it a morning and try again later or tomorrow.

170.6 miles (274.6k) since my last post. Dunno why admin screwed up the system—if it ain't broke, don't fix it!
The good news is, the kidney didn't get any worse after the 4 infusion treatments. The bad news is, there is no good news. Holding at the status quo (not better, not worse).
Hemoglobin down to 7.5 (s/b 13.5 -18) but can't start Epogen (to build up red blood cells) because the blood pressure is too high. Catch 22, you can't get there from here.
But I'm not going to let a little thing like impending doom keep me from riding. Especially now that it's "almost" warm.
2018: 1,104m (1,777k) — Total: 22,087m (33,546k)

Hot, windy and faster than I was able to stay up front for any length of time so pretty much another wheel sucking day of 45 miles. Thankful that the guys take pity on me..
Not able to settle for the 45 miles and 5 miles to ride start so added an additional 50 for another 100 mile day. The front wheel got pushed numerous times from wind gusts so I really have to work on upper body strength.

Typical 40 miles today with moderate winds and temps in 90s. At least it wasn’t very humid. Did 5 miles with the wife on the way back to the van.

After a late start, I also managed 40 miles, pulling in just as the sun set. A bit more humid than it’s been, not too windy, and not a lot of traffic or cyclists. I had a good hard ride, but no way I’m in Blue Ridge Mtn. shape for the tour de Madison on the 19th. My motto this year will be ‘expect less’.
