46 Miles, for a change I rode up to the ski resort again. It's by far the hardest ride I do. 22 miles up with very few flat sections to rest. But the ride back is very fast and easy. There were a lot of downhill bikers up there today, even two kids couldn't been over 4, they didn't take the lift to the top but walked up and rode down a moderately steep run, Lots of kids 14-15 taking the lift to the top. Lots of young women up there too, where were they when I was that young? Weather here is going up fast 98° tomorrow then 105° Wednesday and 103° Thursday, 95° Thursday then a cool 84° on Friday. I don't know how much riding I'm going to do the next few days. Air quality was good this morning them moderate the next time I looked. The air up in the mountains was much better and a lot cooler. August is the smoke month here, there is a very large fire 200 miles south of here. I'm taking off to California in a few weeks for 3-4 weeks, I'mgoing to take my bike with me. I hope to get some long rides in, it's much smokier down there than it is here, I hope it clears up.

A screen shot from the action camera on my handlebars, I have another on on the back of the bike. I got them after reading people say "I woke up in the hospital, I have no idea what happened." There are 40 miles of this on this ride.

Nice 40 miles at weekend. Rain held off, thankfully.

Putting in a lot of rides (if not a lot of miles) on the 'cross bike in preparation for D2R2 which is Saturday August 18th.
- Saturday managed to squeeze in a 27 mile ride with the missus even though most of the day was plagued by torrential thunderstorms
- Sunday did a 45 mile group ride that included a 4-mile stretch of dirt...which, due to the previous day's torrential thunderstorms was a 4-mile stretch of loose, soft, uneven mud & downed trees. Arrgh.
- Today commuted to work, will get the usual ~19 miles

At first I was not going to ride today in order to give my old legs a rest, until checking this week's weather forecast.

It appears higher chances of rainy weather will be moving in starting tomorrow.

So with clear skies today I went ahead and got in a quick 90 minutes.

Another 19 mile day as Bike Commuter Man! Pretty danged hot but I guess the 13mph headwind-ish made it seem not quite so danged hot.

Yes. First real mountain bike ride in a couple months due to a bad hamstring injury. Off to my favorite local trail. Johnson Ranch, San Luis Obispo, Ca. Good to be back!

50 miles on a hot 95° day. I leave the house with a wet jersey and sun sleeves, the water evaporates and cools me off.

I think I scared a 15 year old boy's life for ever today, I made 7 stops at parks or irrigation canals to dip my jersey and stay cool. My first stop was at a large new park in an expensive new housing development. They have a building with two restrooms. I opened the first one and discovered a young boy on his back on the floor with his shorts pulled down with toilet tissue scattered around him. I very quickly closed the door and went into the second one. I soaked my jersey and sun sleeves then left. I went around to the side if the building to drink from the water fountain, then paused to check out a bike parked next to it. The kid heard me leave the restroom and waited a minute for me to leave, so he comes around the corner with a very upset look on his face, looks up and is shocked to see me still there. I quickly rode away. Oh to be 15 again, but without the restroom incident.

48 miles of mixed pavement and gravel. 3643’ ascent/descent including a one mile gravel climb where a sign urged motorists to use 4 wheel drive. Consulting the map I was excited to discover a road that appeared to traverse the mountain and take me to the next highway over. Four Mile Wood Road was a beautiful Jeep trail but unfortunately ended for me when it turned into an overgrown single track. Just about then the distant growls of thunder started and I got off the mountain and back onto pavement as quickly as I could to beat a retreat home - still about 15 miles away. The rain gods were kind and let me off with me with just a few sprinkles. One minute after I pulled the bike into the garage the skies opened up.

Did the same 22 mile ride as yesterday, with a subset of yesterday's group, only this time on my 'cross bike. Man, 37c knobby tires do not like 30+mph sprints! That hurt!

...Just a very quick 8.25 mi ride through the neighborhood side streets, before the heat & humidity started and next thing you know, it'll be 94°F and 80% humidity...

I went out around 9:30am this morning and it was already 82°F with a "feels like" temp of 90°F. As seen in the photo, I made the mistake of not bringing a water bottle with me, figuring it's just an easy peasy, very quick, 8 mile ride. Pffffttt... I'll be home in a half hour, you know what I mean? Lesson learned --- ALWAYS bring a water bottle with you, no matter what! Man, I was so thirsty by the time I got home. Oops...

Rain predicted today so drove to work. Then didn’t rain till driving home - poured down. But, storm passed through and sun came out when I got home so out for an unexpected 11 mile ride.

It was 104° yesterday and 100° today, I've ridden in those temps many times, even last year, but I'm wimping out this time. It'll be 94° tomorrow, which I don't find uncomfortable, so I'll go tomorrow. Still a lot of smoke from the forest fires, August is the smoke month here.

Was riding my usual path for my road bike and came across this police activity:

Sadly it was a body that they pulled out of the bay.

Sunday, Monday and Tuesday combined I got less than 10 miles in. Rain, which wouldn't have been so bad except for the lightening. When it wasn't storming the wind was brutal.

Finally today I was able to get in a decent pre-work ride and even got in a few miles after work.

The weekend forecast is looking great...fingers crossed.

My first time back on the bike for many many years the tourer has just done 500 miles and the new bike the first 100 miles, a well earned break at Haverford College
