Managed to squeeze in an 18 mile road ride with the missus before work. First time I've been on the bike since Saturday. It wasn't so much the single-digit temps these last three days that kept me off the bike; it was the combination of single-digit temps with 40mph wind gusts! Monday I could barely even walk outside!

27 miles on a semi-warm Thursday evening. Pleasantly mild after a few cold and very windy days. Put new sealed bearing pulley wheels on the rear derailleur, seemed smoother, especially on climbs.

Tan saddle on light orange bike???? Maybe black is better + tire matches.
Haven't ridden much in Jan.
Hoping my local hikes and vacation swimming in tropical waters might help me out when chasing younger guys through the hills and dales.
T'was truly exhilarating and fun.

40 miles Friday night, for our local Critical Mass-Lite (more of a casual group ride around town with only a dozen cyclists). About 24 miles round trip to and from the group ride, the rest was the CM ride itself. I'd planned to skip tonight but the weather improved a bit, didn't drop below 40F until after 11 pm so it turned out to be pleasant. Just about a mile from home the weather changed quickly, head wind from the north and temperature drop, so I got home just in time. And I need to catch up with my cycling buds once in awhile so I'm not such a hermit.

And I need this jersey in @Wildwood's photo. I usually prefer mostly subdued or solid colors without logos, but I've always liked that Mondrian inspired 1985 La Vie Claire jersey. I keep seeing ads on Facebook from a vendor selling it and other retro jerseys for around $39. Very tempting. And it might bring out the badger in me.

43 miles on my gravel bike with about 20 miles of dirt roads. Boy, I have a really long way to go to regain my form. I think it was my first gravel ride since riding in Banff last July.

Nice day for a ride with the tifosi - through the countryside on classic race steel. A zippy fun experience.

Last week a quick ride that got rained out 15 minutes from home. Saw the front coming, thought I could finish a loop ahead of it, but the rain was leading the clouds. The rain ended about the time I turned into my driveway. I got soaked, only 56F but I was warm from the effort, and it was great to get out.

Thursday morning a two hour ride during sunrise, 31F. This morning, a direct run to the library (no loop this time, 15min out and 30min uphill return) to take back The Desolation of Smaug and The Battle of the Five Armies.

Rode my Orbea MD 40 today. I had not been on it in a month or so. Very pretty, nice day for a ride. Got in 26 miles this afternoon, mid 40s with E wind 10 to 12 mph. I saw only a few bikes on the road. Hit the Bethany Beach boardwalk, a lot of people there for some kind of winter event, ice carvings and such. Back to the road where it was less crowded.

Ninety-one kilometers by the beach on my way to Montecito and back. Some climbing, beautiful day, beautiful vistas, great day for riding.

Road thru the snow yesterday with a temp of no more than 15 degrees to the library. I know this was a joke about walking to school, but I kid you not, up hill both ways. The back road I take has a high point where two roads intersect and a hill on both sides of it. I climb a hill to turn a corner and ride back down one both directions. If it weren't only a mile away, I probably wouldn't have gone, because the side of the road is covered in so much snow.

Started my day doing some work on my '91 Ochsner steel road bike. I am beginning the process of changing it back to original set up. Repacked the bearings on both front and rear wheels, Mavic MA 2 with 1050, 105 hubs. Put the new 6 speed freehweel on the back and mounted Zaffiro Pro 25 mm tires on both wheels. Installed new gear cables and dialed them in. Put on new brake pads and adjusted the brakes. I am looking to replace the stem and handlebars but not sure with what at this point. Originals were Cinelli quill stem and 64 Giro d'Italia handlebars. Unfortunately, I foolishly tossed them 3 or 4 years ago. I was moving and I thought I would never use them again. I am liking the Soma Highway One handlebars in silver. I have a Promax quill stem that is too long for my steerer tube. I might just cut about 1 1/2 inches off of it. Once I had some food I went for a shakedown ride. I did what is sort of become my route for shorter, quick rides. Rode to the Bethany Beach boardwalk and back to my home, 15 miles. Bike is riding great.

Nice to end January with some good saddle time.

We are having our "arctic blast" this weekend. It was only 68 and overcast when I headed out this afternoon for my usual Sunday 50 miler where I do a couple laps on the nearby army bases then head to Oahu north shore. With the cold came a pretty good north wind which is unusual here (normally we have a pretty good wind, but E or NE tradewinds). This resulted in having a nice tailwind coming back home up our 1000' "pineapple hill". Between the cool temps and the easy ride in, felt like I could do another 50 when I got home. Next Sunday I will be doing my annual post-super bowl ride (I get a couple hours between the game and sunset here).

I wish. Chickened Out - Polar Vortex

Too much work today. Also winds blow 20-30 mph and the temp is plummeting (polar vortex). Should I get an indoor trainer and try Zwift?
