After taking a couple days off I got out for a 2 hour ride today before the daily afternoon showers began.
On hindsight I should not have taken off the weekend, because of Sub-Tropical Storm Alberto. Depending on its path we could get a big rain event.

41 mile ride with The C2C group and Tropical Storm Alberto for our annual Memorial Day Ride. We got very little rain during the ride but the 25-35 mph, continuous wind was a killer.

Legs were still a bit tired from yesterday's brutal wind ride in Tropical Storm Alberto so this morning I went out for a fairly easy, 25 mile, recovery ride for the legs. Unfortunately, Alberto didn't take all the wind with him as he moved northward. Still had some pretty hefty bands of wind this morning.

10 quiet miles on the road bike with the cycle club - 12 in our group. We kept to the bike trail due to rush hour traffic on the roads. Being careful not to put too many miles on my knee on any one ride with my road bike, and thus far the strategy has been successful to achieve zero pain.

46 Miles Started out warm and sunny, but the last hour was cold, I thought about putting my arm warmers on, but I didn't feel like stopping. I stopped and rested a few minutes at this private bike aid station. It has a commercial pump and stand with the usual tools for emergency bike adjustments. And a large mail box full of new 700c/20-23 mm tubes, 4 tubes of sunblock and a first aid kit. It's on a small road about 15 miles from the nearest town or bike shop

Twin Bridges bike aid station. Free tubes, sunblock and a commercial bike repair stand.

Kudos to whomever keeps that stocked. What's the story on the bikes on top of the rail? Displays to get your attention?

Was away for the holiday weekend...riding, of course! So, to summarize:
- Friday, 25 mile spin with the missus
- Saturday, 70 mile hard fast group ride with a bunch of idiots
- Sunday, 15 mile time trial
- Monday, 36 mile medium-hard effort w/ the missus
- Tuesday, 7 mile ride just to get my commuter bike back from the shop (note to self: Do *not* wait another 7 years between chain replacements!)
- today: Hard 25 mile solo effort

What a day!
First, I slept in a lot later than normal, and then had a hard time getting motivated. I finally decided to get moving, got dressed to ride, and discovered another flat tire, this time on the rear wheel. Second flat this year, and second in as many weeks!

After all the delays I finally got out on the road during the heat and humidity of mid-day and during the lunch hour traffic.
My legs did not want to respond, and I had to battle a 15 mph southerly wind. Finally, after only a hour of riding I decided to just call it a day before something else would go wrong.

Got in a short 66 minutes.

By the way I still haven't found the source of the leak in the inner tube. Do these tubes just spontaneously go flat?

town or bike shop,
What a neat idea! You are very fortunate to have access to such a nice amenity. Around these parts all of that would be stolen in no time by the hoodlums from the nearby ghetto city. Lol.

I rode briefly with the owner, maybe 2 miles, it was a few years ago before he put up the tools. The Bikes are old inexpensive Schwinn bikes that aren't in rideable shape, mostly for decoration and showing he's a rider and rider friendly. It's on a little used road, but part of the Oregon Scenic Bikeway. Not too many tourists get out this far, but it's great riding out there, I try to ride out there 2-3 times a week. There was a house about a mile away with signs pointing to a free water tap a hundred feet down their driveway. I stopped for water once last year. The ranch might have been sold as the signs are now gone. This is way out in the country often a half mile or more between houses.

People out here are very trusting and honest. There area few "Honor" produce stands in late summer, where people put vegetables, mostly tomatoes, out with the cash in a box where you can make change if you don't have the exact amount. I buy lot's of tomatoes there.

No flats today! Yea!
And, I got up early enough to get out this morning before the heat and humidity of the day.
The average temp this time of year is 85F, and we have been getting into the lower 90's.
Got in a nice 105 minute ride.

Needed to replace the handlebar tape. so with the housings exposed I replaced the brake housings and cable and the shifter housings and cable. I wish I was better at wrapping handlebar tape, I don't know how the bike store wrenches make it seem so easy. Rained and was cold today anyway.

19.1 miles (30.7k). Dr. visit Wed revealed that both kidneys are bad, not just the one (I didn't know that) and they will not get any better. However, we can keep them from getting any worse (in theory). More infusion treatments in October. The Epogen (one belly shot per week—to raise hemoglobin count) takes about 4 weeks to show signs of increased count, it's been just over two weeks and is up only point 3 to 7.9 (normal is 13 and up). Target is 11. So I can still ride and carry on a mostly normal life. Dialysis may be in my future (DOA!)

2013: 1,312m (2,111k) —Total:22,295m (35,880k)

60 miles in 90*+ heat and high humidity to start off the month on the right foot. Here’s hoping this month’s weather is better than last month.

51 Miles. I got a very late start; 2:30 PM, because I was still fine tuning the new brake and shifter cables I installed yesterday, but the late start was great because it was warmest at 6:30. Beautiful day blue skies, warm. Shifting is much smoother and braking seems to be twice as powerful than before. The right 1/2 of the handlebar wrap is very noticeably thicker than the left side. I seriously suck at wrapping bartape.

I did 31.65 miles this morning at around 9:00 am....

This was River Rd early this morning... Not a car in sight! I love it when it's just you, your bicycle, and an empty road ahead. You want to just ride and ride and be gone for hours!

I *tried* to get into the Farmers Market in Manakin Sabot, but there was so much traffic along Broad St. and people all over the place...

Edit: I had to remove some imbedded video links from Facebook (they didn't upload for some reason). Oh well...

A few few photos from today’s 90+ miler with 6000’ of rollers along the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Quiet rural roads with long views with a great local Porter at the finish.

jppe: 6K of rollers sounds like a real workout to me. Meanwhile, I went around the block. Last ride I almost did a tombe trying to get out of my pedal, so I figured no sense trying to milk some more miles out of these cleats (Look Keo). Went down to the LBS today and picked up a new pair. Put them on and went for the around-the-block shakedown ride. It was dusk, so convinced my wife to follow in the car and give a review while I set my tail light into its different modes. (This light is a Lupine Rotlicht which is insanely expensive but it is a nice light. Got it from Bike24 in Germany). Anyway the new cleats make for a way-better clip-out experience so I guess that was money well-spent. Tomorrow I will do my normal 50 miler to Oahu north shore and back up our 1000' Pineapple Hill.

Yesterday clocked in with the hottest high temp of the year at 94F. Last night a "cold front" came through and moderated the temps about 10 degrees cooler.
But the biggest difference is the northerly winds lowering the humidity a great deal. So, it's hard to complain about those 15 mph northerly winds at this time of year.
Got in a wonderful 2.0 hour ride at midday.

Plan A was to get out early and beat the heat, but it poured as I was getting ready to leave. Plan B, out at 10:00, exposed me to the heat and humidity of the day. In 53 miles I experienced blazing sun, closed sections of trail, pelting rain, wet and slimy trails, and towards the end, general exhaustion and some bonking. But I live to ride another day......
