This time of year every ride feels like the last-ride-of-the-year. Managed 25 miles on the rail trail in Groton State Forest. 40 degrees and looked a a lot different from my summer ride there.

Nice day

Nice day for a bike ride, low 50s and SW wind about 10mph. Rode from home to the Indian River Inlet Bridge, about 5 miles north of Bethany Beach. Once I crossed the bridge I turned around and headed home, total miles about 22. Home in time for lunch, walk the dog and then off to do my afternoon school bus route.

Looking east from Indian River inlet bridge, DEL. Fishing trawler bringing their equipment ashore.

Eastward from the Indian River Inlet Bridge, DEL

Small waves with some surfers, probably do not show too well

Sub freezing

30 miles on my Rockhopper at 28-30 F. I’m officially ready for winter riding now.

Tuesday did this ride again, except found a way to exit the highway halfway down and go through old neighborhoods I'd never had reason to go through before. This was just a scouting ride to see if that route would work, and boy did it ever work. I love being out there at night, having the roads to myself. It's so much better than being in with that traffic. 28F.

Rode from dawn into morning yesterday. A fiery sunrise behind me. Strangely warm after a cold couple weeks, with a stiff breeze from the southeast bringing in the warmth. I dressed for cold and had to shed layers. 11 miles, 45F.

Didn't ride the whole thing, but did participate in a Major Taylor Birthday ride in Indy today with about 20 other cyclists. Started and finished at the Major Taylor Velodrome.

25 miles Saturday night, first ride since surgery on Tuesday. Felt pretty good but rode the hybrid and took it easy. Pleasantly cool but very windy, 15-25 mph.

Today I am 51 I wanted to ride 51 miles but my 8 year old grandson just had to spend the night with me because he wanted to play video games all night. By the time I take him home and get back it will be an hour before dark. Actually thinking about whipping out my Niterider lights and doing it anyway.

Got back from an Oasis of the Seas cruise last Sunday with no biking that week so I made sure I made up for it this past week.

Tuesday was 115 miles. Had 60 miles in when I met a group of 5 I never rode with before. Could only suck wheel for 36 miles since they were moving at a good pace.

Thursday I got 46 miles in and "out of the blue" decided to walk in a Turkey Trot 5K our LBS owners have put on for the last 5 years. Managed a 11:30mpm pace walking then hopped back on the bike for another 66 miles.

Yesterday was 112 miles with 1 flat but I also found a nickle.

I did my 3 standard laps of Prospect Park in the sunny/55 degree day. About 15 miles. I have had a severe case of sciatica the last few days, really painful down my right leg, but I didn't feel a thing as I was riding. Now that I've stopped I feel it again. Maybe I should just ride all day tomorrow instead of work

21 miles this afternoon - west over White River and down into Morgan County. And back. Overcast and upper 50's - gonna get much colder early in the week.

Spent last week (Thanksgiving) visiting family out on NorCal. Was able to squeeze in a couple of ~20 mile road rides on my brother-in-law's bike, one solo, the other with the missus.
Got home on the red eye Saturday morning, still managed to get a 23 mile solo ride in later that day.
Sunday I did a 41 mile group ride with the Fast Kids, then tacked another 12 miles onto that cruising around waiting for the missus to return from her ride.
Today it rained, so no ride.

Got 18 miles in yesterday morning, a biting, windy 39F. Further exploration of new neighborhoods, and the real treat of an unused road (water tank access) that turned to scrub where it crossed over a hill under tree cover before dropping back down and merging back into the real road on the other side. Finished cold and worn after headwinds on the return. Those three hours were a long day. Feeling used up at the moment.

Happy birthday anyway. I had surgery for my 61st birthday last week. Yay. Actually glad to get it over with. Already back on the bike.

12 mile test ride around the neighborhood Tuesday night. Waited until the temp was in the 40s to test out some new Pearl Izumi shoe covers. My toes are the first thing to get unbearably cold, so even in Texas I'm needing better foot protection. Unless I'm riding my hybrid with platform pedals, in which case I wear my 50 year old Herman Survivor double insulated hiking boots.

I had some toe covers but the straps interfered with clipping in/out. No problems with the full shoe covers and they're warmer. Should be okay down to freezing for 20-30 mile rides. Below that I'll need shoes with a larger toe box and no vents. My Scott Pro road shoes are snug summer weight with vents, which are great in summer. But I can't wear two pairs of socks without cutting off circulation to my toes. So the only option is thin baggies over my socks inside the shoes (actually works), aluminum foil under the orthotic support, and a full shoe cover.

Went out for a night singletrack ride last night - only an hour, but great ride. Chilly (near freezing and breezy), but I warmed up just fine and had a great time.

Inaugural ride with these lights:
- Handlebar light - Lezyne SuperDrive 1500XXL set at 1500 lumens
- Helmet light - Night Rider Micro 850 at 850 lumens

43 miles Wednesday, about 20 of those a group ride, the rest to and from. Third ride since surgery last week. Surprised how quickly I've been able to get back on the bike. My speed isn't back yet and hills are still a slow slog, but the stamina is still there as long as I stay within my limits.
