Did 24 miles on the still closed Blue Ridge Parkway with about 2,000 feet up. Beautiful, peaceful ride with the sun shining brightly; back into the deep freeze for a few days after today. Tree crew was out and looks like the lower sections of the BRP will be open after the snow tomorrow melts.

Not today, but Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Friday, 39 miles was a great day, temperatures in the 50°s after months of low 40° rides. Saturday was a recovery ride 8 miles, but I rode it a little too hard to really call it a recovery day, but it was short. Sunday, 43 miles, was amazing, temperatures in the mid 60°s I had to stop and take all my layers until I was down to shorts and jersey only. It felt so good to ride without all the extra layers. Made such a difference. I could grow to like this bicycling stuff.. First time this year I saw any other riders, and there were lots of them. Temperatures have dropped into the 40s again, might snow by the end of the week. But spring and Summer are coming soon!

Wednesday, 43 Miles. Started out cold, but near the end of the ride it had warmed up a little. I was riding into the sun and couldn't see the road in the shadows right in front of me. I hit a large rock and a few seconds later my front tire went flat. My first flat in a very long time. Today is a beautiful day, it's 10° warmer.

It's been raining pretty hard in Los Angeles since last night and the streets get pretty flooded, so I didn't do my usual early morning ride. It cleared just enough at 2:30 this afternoon to get a good 21 miles ride in. Riding in the rain in L.A. with the traffic can be fairly hazardous to your health.

I did my Bethany Beach, boardwalk and back home in the snow today, 14 m round trip. It turned into a lovely afternoon for a ride, sunny, mid 30s with a light wind from SW.

Just got back from a very pleasant 1 hour 50 min after-dark ride up north, around the mountain, then returning from the south. This is the second long ride with the new seat post, and it's great getting some miles in again instead of being stuck doing laps in the neighborhood. Had the shock of my life though when a big dog appeared out of the dark about two inches from my right leg, barking his head off. I looped back and spent five minutes making the point that he has to share the road.
I really enjoyed the 70F spring weather today, except that it's supposed to be the dead of winter and this isn't the sign of a healthy planet.

I'm wondering if my pre-marathon form will return and that was only 3 weeks ago. This coming Saturday to Sunday is Bike Sebring 12/24 Hours ( Bike Sebring 12/24 ) that I was planning on riding for 3rd time but recently cancelled our room stay.
Cross Florida 1 Day ( https://raceroster.com/events/2019/1...s-florida-ride ) beginning of April with a contingent from LBS and wanted to ride it. Would be my 4th after 3 years of SOLO riding but worrying about it also.
Getting older makes things harder and adding cancer into the mix makes things crappier.

I totally agree. Increasing age is tough enough, but when you add in setbacks like ours it seems to make it much more challenging.
Sadly I had ridden myself back into super top form just before I crashed. As you know that kind of conditioning doesn’t come without a lot of effort. I just don’t know if the motivation is there to push through all that again. I’ve been riding and normally I’d see some progression over time but if anything it seems to be getting worse???
Like you, for now I’m resetting a lot of plans. Registration just opened for one of my favorite hilly mountain rides that will be held in June. This will be the first year I haven’t signed up for it in a long long time.
My my mindset right is just doing the joy riding.

First tandem ride of 2019 this afternoon in sunny 60ish weather - stoker in pretty good form following bunion repair in November. 6 miles.
Followed by a solo 9 mile ride on the ti 'bent.
Both rides much more fun than using the recumbent machines at the YMCA.

27 miles Sunday afternoon. Another windy day, sluggish into headwinds, fast on tailwind segments. Set a new PR on a 2+ mile moderate grade climb. That's always encouraging, even if it is tailwind assisted.
I know the feeling. My conditioning had peaked in March-April 2018. Took a lot of work to get there. Then I was hit by a car in May. During diagnostics to check my neck they found I had thyroid cancer. It was November before I could get surgery. And the broken/dislocated shoulder took longer than I'd expected to heal. The thyroid meds weren't working, my thyroid level is still too low so I'm seeing the endocrinologist tomorrow.
So 2018 was mostly treading water. I spent a lot of time on an indoor trainer. It helped keep me within about 80% of my aerobic conditioning. I'm still able to handle only one or two road rides a week. On paper my Strava times the past couple of weeks have been good, back to where I was last year. But in practice it doesn't feel right -- I'm red-lined in efforts to get back into shape and it's taking longer to recover between workouts. I'm impatient and tend to push when I should be resting.
It'll come back. I just need to be patient. Easier said than done.

No kidding! On both days: That 22°F Saturday ride was actually pretty nice...because the skies were clear and the sun was out. Would rather ride bright sunny 20° than gray overcast 30° any day.
