Moon was high in the sky yesterday as I headed out at 12:25AM for another quiet and nippy morning ride. Finished with 122 miles.

My first significant ride since February 1st. Canadian prairies have been in the deep freeze, but weather was mild at -14 Celsius. Our annual Winter Festival is on and we have a "Crokicurl" rink in the city square.

Did a 30 mile gravel ride, first 15mi into a stiff 15mph wind, gusting 30mph. Wind chill was 29F. At one point I accidentally dialed 911! My iPhone was in a zipped pants pocket, and while trying to silence an incoming call, I tapped the on-off button several times. I was wearing heavy gloves...not easy to do...Then I heard that beeping countdown, and I knew what was happening. Stopped the bike and ripped out phone hoping to stop the process, but alas, it was too late...it was ringing 911. So I hung up! Then it occurred to me that that was the incorrect thing to do, so I called back, explained what had happened. The operator thanked me for calling back, and off I went.

All I can say is ----- wow, WOW, WOW bicycling under that moonlit sky last night. Winds were low, humidity a bit high, temp in low 70's. 101 miles already, finishing my break and heading back out. Got to force another 50 miles out of this body.

Set out for a speed run to the greenway, about 5.5 miles from home. This is the only ride I do for time, everything else is just for exercise and fun. Got caught by the light and blew my time a mile from home, waiting through two cycles at a traffic light before deciding to run it. (I have a history with local police. Walking in public is apparently considered suspicious, and I became more pointed in my objection with each successive stop. After 8 times, it became quite contentious. So I don't want to give them any excuse to ticket me.)

Tried again two days later, and that time I set a new PR, no trouble at the light. It felt good going in; I'd figured I'd be able to knock off last year's record just from the way I felt.

Went again early this morning. No new record with a headwind, but the moonlight was stunning. Added 12 miles of loop up north then flatted out four miles from home. Wouldn't you know, the pump head had disassembled itself in my pack and a piece was missing, so that ride ended with a moonlit hike.

Skipped my normal Sunday ride as I was doing the "Great Aloha Run" 8.2 mile race on Monday. It's a point-to-point starts at Aloha Tower downtown and ends at Aloha Stadium in Aiea. Did a little over 1:41 (56/207 in the M65-69 class). This is the only running I do any more. First did the race in its inaugural in 1985. Done most of them except for a period I was on the mainland. I keep thinking "gee if I just did some running practice I know I could improve my time", but I would rather ride a bike, and besides, from experience I know more running will just cause joint pain I don't really need.

Planned to rest most of this week but Wednesday was too nice -- cool but mostly sunny and little wind. Rode 21 miles, which was about all the fun I could stand. My average speed is the same as usual but I still don't have my regular energy. Feeling kinda spent after every ride. Doc says the thyroid meds may take 6-8 weeks to make a discernible difference and it's been 3. I'm anxious to get back to the fitness and energy level I had last March, and am pretty much on target for that.

Just my usual before work ride. 14.3 miles starting at 4:15 AM. 34°. That's about as cold as it gets here in a normal year.

Wife went to daughter's so I got out late last night for a 154.7 mile over nighter. With an almost full moon, cloudless sky, traffic near 0, only 1 wild boar running along side ----- AWESOME!

23 miles on a very windy Saturday afternoon. Chasing new PRs on an eastbound segment with tailwind. Working the legs on a westbound segment with moderate rollers into the headwind -- almost feels like climbing a real hill. Got some new PRs, cracked the top ten, but still a full minute behind the KOM.

Friday night a speed run to the greenway. I was trying to squeeze into a four-hour gap in the rains, but by the time I left home that was a half-hour gap at most. 56F and solid rain on the return, which it turns out is plenty warm when I'm working hard. A nice ride through farmland; all the fields were inland oceans.

This morning before dawn made a run to the library to drop off a book (Tim Jackson - Prosperity Without Growth) and then up into the hills from there. The rains finally cleared up at 2AM and we should get a few days of relief.

Finally! We got a day of decent weather after all the rain, flood warnings and tornado watches.
Got in 70 minutes on a sunny, but windy, 45F day,

A nice surprise with a beautiful sunny but cool day as I started late morning. 43 degrees, feels like 35 degrees is what the report tells me. Add wind chill and a head wind and after 10 1/4 miles I couldn't feel the shifters or brakes by the time I finished. As my first real ride after over 15 years, that was plenty. It felt great though but gloves with fingers and something for my ears would be welcome. This is the Green River near River Bend Golf Course.

No, didn't ride today but got back from 9 days away from Winter: 2 days in Mandeville, Louisiana and then 7 days in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Took the tandem and were able to ride every day, in spite of crappy/rainy weather forecasts. 60 miles in Mandeville, including the Tammany Trace, and 134 total miles at Gulf Shores, much of which was within Gulf State Park. Friends of ours spend time in the park's RV/trailer campground - we rode most days with them and other snowbirds who stay there - Folks on Spokes.

Finally the sun was out today, in between storms. Still used the beater though since there were a lot of wet patches.
