How would you have responded?

Did another century yesterday with 650 others. The marqee climb comes at 60 miles. It's 5 mile climb starting at 1 per cent-gets steeper as you go with the last 2 miles 15 per cent.

On the upper part I flew past folks while I was doing 3-4 mph??

At the top I stopped to recover and get fluids. A younger fellow rode up behind me and asked:

How old ARE you?

Maybe I should have been wearing my 50+ jersey??

Why was he asking?

My goal is not to ride like a 20 year old.

My goal is to ride like the 70 year olds in the cycling club, who could crush the 20 year olds on any ride that required endurance, self-discipline, and judgment.

I know a raquetball guy who uses this line all the time when he squishes the youthful players.

I was working a boat inspection a couple days ago. Two men in their forties came over to me to ask what sport I "did". One of them said you must participate in something to look like that, and how old are you?
I told them my age, 60, and said I ride a bicycle. Both of them said they would start riding a bicycle that afternoon.

I would have stated my age and then said "why do you ask?" At that point the conversation begins. Are we so smug we can't answer a straight question anymore?

It's a compliment, jppe. A lot of people are surprised when they see an older person who is in shape enough to kick their butt.

You could have told him you are 76 and this was a recovery ride from RAAM.

+1

A few years ago I was on a ride your age ride- in january- and this was my first one on the Road bike- The OCR3. I pulled out of a junction just before a group of riders and this is the part where On my rides I put in the power for about 5 miles- so I went for it. I only had about 10 miles to go and still felt good so why not

As I slowed down- They caught up with me and they all had decent bikes- and it looked as though they were on a club ride. This was the "C" group and they were out for a steady 30 miler across the marshes. Nice and flat and they were approaching the turn round point. Got chatting to a couple of them and They asked how old I was. Told them and I also told them I was riding my age today.

"So you must live in Eastbourne and you have just started the ride"

When I told them I only had another 5 miles to go and I was now on my cool down they were a bit surprised.

Was I glad that they turned off about a mile further on as The pace they were keeping was killing me.
