O dark 30
Sept 8th was the last time my riding buddy and I went out at 6AM for a morning training ride. It simply is too dark to get an hour ride in with time to clean up and get to work. Last week I took a longer lunch break and rode with a group at work, but they ride irregularly so it is not good to plan for them. But now I have a very good head light so I convinced my riding buddy to go out at 6AM this morning - he was very skeptical. He has a light as well but it is not as bright and he felt he had to go to slow to be safe.
This morning we rode side by side on the bike path mostly using my light until the sun came up, we were able to comfortably cruise at 20mph on the mountain bikes with plenty of visibility even though it was very dark due to the overcast conditions and heavy tree canopy. I think we are now set - this should get us through until the ice comes. I can put off the trainer for a few more months now.

If you get into a situation where you have to go single file, it works better if the guy with the light rides behind.
