A little quiz...

So this was the scene at our house today (grown man crying).........

...but what does it Mean?

A.) Will this be the warmest temp. that this gadget will read for the next six months?

B.) Will we have to install these onto our four wheeled motorized vehicle?

C.) Will I be doing more of this? Yipee!!!!!

D.) All of the above!!

The correct answer of course is 'D' All of the above.

The screens are put away, the storm windows are up , and the long range forecast is wet & cold! By the way, that thermostat is in our living room and it read 55F yesterday morning. We had our last warm day yesterday and we threw open the windows to heat the house up and we raised the temp to 60F. I really don't want to turn the furnace on until at least November. I do have the winter bike all tuned and tested and ready to go!!

Wimp

You what to expect so quit moaning

Saying that- rather you than me and have the thermostat set to 60 at home and the heating hasn't come on yet. Won't be long till I feel like Michelin man on the rides with all the extra clothing but at least it won't be as low a temp as you are expecting. Might see a few days this Autumn down to zero but the cold will come in February. Thats when I will be Hibernating.

Just yesterday I looked up 5 long-range winter forecasts. All five were predicting colder than normal temps with higher than normal snowfall for the East Coast, from North Carolina to Maine and inland across PA, WV, and down into Tennessee.

They feel the storm track from the west is going to follow a more southerly route this winter, coming across Missouri and heading into NC and the Virginias. This will allow cold air to fall from Canada down into the east. Then when the storm track gets closer to the Atlantic, it will be forced north into the cold fronts, creating snow.

A couple of these long-range forecasters have fairly accurate track records.

As for us, this is good news. The southerly storm track will push moderate temps our way and the snow we've been getting these past two years, will largely stay to the south. Central and southern Illinois is projected to get more snow than Wisconsin. So we may be looking at a moderate to mild winter. We could use one.

Of course a "mild" winter in Wisconsin is when the highs stay up around 25-30 and the lows at around 10. A sunny January day with a high of 30 and low of 10 is a nice day.

Tom -- where did you find that long-range winter forecast, especially the ones with accurate track records?

Cranky -- I love that last photo; I'll think of it when I'm tempted to wimp out on our 50-something winter mornings.

Problem with taking those "Snow" scenes- is that you have to get out there in the first place to take them.

And we don't get snow often over here this was about 5 years ago.

Here's one, from "Accuweather's Chief Meteorologist and Expert Long Range Forecaster Joe Bastardi"
https://gsimmonssc.blogspot.com/2009/...2009-2010.html

And from the National Weather Service:
https://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/product...nal.php?lead=3

This second one isn't as negative for the Northeast, calling for normal temps and precipitation. I like how it is very positive for the upper Midwest.

I found several others, most of which were closer to the Accuweather guy's predictions.

I'm thinking it's about time to head south. The Tucson forecast is for highs in the low 80's and high 70's for the next week followed by a warming trend.

My daughter says the same thing. She moved to L.A. a while back and says the weather there is so boring. Here she is enjoying a rare Sunny day last winter during a visit.

We have saved her seat for her when she comes for another visit, we just can't guarantee any sunshine.

Your not the only one getting ready Lenny - so are we on the east side of the state. I have had the heat on this week, we got up one morning to a house at around 50 and the wife switched on the heat.

I recognize that stuff around your daughter in the pic - old march snow with that glazed over look.

We were up at Whiteface today for the Octoberfest. They had snow on the moutain last week.

I can take it - I'll be waxing up the skis soon - 55 days and the mountain opens

Yup, winter's on the way in Tucson!
This is the first week that the temp's under 90+ degrees.
Time to find our sunshine-shovel so we can get to our mailbox in December!

I never used to mind winter much, but for several years now Reynaud's Phenomenon has put a serious crimp on my outdoor activities in the winter.
