I agree that performance gains are true but I was watching the World Champinship Downhill MBT races on the tube the other night and I believe some of the top guys have gone back to platforms. I think Sam Hill was one and he won. Now Downhill might be different then say single track or cross country too.

I think most downhill racers use platforms. They may need to put a foot down for balance in some turns. I wouldn't think of riding singletrack without clipless pedals. I wouldn't think about running a downhill course period.

When I started riding last year I got in the habit of unclipping my left foot. A few months later I went on my first club ride. A few minutes after the start we got a red light and I instinctfully unclipped my left foot while the folks right in front of me unclipped their right foot. As they came to a stop and put their right feet on the curb I leaned to the right also and down I went onto the sidewalk with an audience watching. Since then I concentrate more carefully when coming to a stop.
