Question about spd cycling shoes

Specifically - in this case - Sidi mountain shoes. I notice on some of the higher end shoes there are two bolts or in this case screws in the sole near the front of the shoe. Does anyone know what these are for?
Thanks.

cleats for digging into the dirt as you throw the bike over your shoulder and run up that mountain.

I have a pair of Lake winter cycling boots which have a pair of cleats like what you see on soccer boots. There are two of them on each boot, near the toe. They have been worn down to mere bumps now. Not sure what real function they provided....

If you have to carry a bike up a hill- Find a shorter hill

They work like football studs to give you more grip but they can be uncomfortable on Dry soil.

Thanks Everyone for your responses.
No, I'm not carrying my bike up hills, nor am I going off road. I do prefer having the spd cleat recessed.
At least now I know what they are.

This is one of the big advantages of clipless pedals - you can put studs under the toe of the shoe. When we were still using toe clips and riding cyclo-cross, we would use soccer shoes instead of cycling shoes, but we'd have to cut off the front studs so we could get the shoes in and out of the toe clips.

This is timely. Found a little sack with the cleats for the front of my mt. shoes the other day. Have never used them but the way the weather is going they might work well in the snow.
