140 Mile Solo Bicycle Day Ride (VIDEOS)

I found out some new things this day:

1. I can comfortably wear my helmet cam setup for 9 hours.

2. All of the hurricane damaged roads that let me get out of NOLA by bike are repaired.

3. For an old fart (51), I still got game. Spent the whole day on the road bike, cranked out 142 miles, and biked to work the next day to spend 9 hours on my feet.

If you only have time to watch one vid, pick Part 2. That's the best one IMO. And you get a very rare look at me in full kit 'bout halfway through it.

PART 1
PART 2 - BEST
PART 3

Each vid is about 12 minutes long.

I am also posting this in Touring and Commuting forums. I just found out about the "Long Distance" forum too.

Start/Finish in New Orleans bottom of the map.

Thanks

HERE is a BF link to my cam. Better ones are now available.

The manufacturer now makes a tripod mount that I used with a tiny backpacking camera tripod that will strap to almost anything. Amazon sells all of the goodies as does https://helmetcameracentral.com

I know! Next time I get the idea to do that ride, I can just look at all of my footage and go take a nap instead!

Congratulations on the great ride, Joey. Outstanding video ride report.

I went to school in New Orleans in the 70s. Started at LSUNO and graduated from UNO

Very enjoyable. Thanks.

I got a little shiver up my spine when you squeezed between those cars and the school buses.

Those school buses had just dropped off the kids and were empty. Fair game in my book.

Glad you liked the rest.

Thanks, I watched #2 and then watched the Saturday commute thru the French Quarter. In the late 90's I visited New Orleans after riding Masters Track Nationals in Houston. Spent a few days in a b&b in the French Quarter with my girlfriend. The video brings back memories. I think we stayed near where all those international flags were, and I remember the big marketplace near the river (I bought a watercolor of the bayou).
Thanks! Great stuff. Be careful running them red lights!

Thanks for this video. Great stuff.
It is a lonely sport is it not? I did not see many bikers in that long ride. This is my experience around here also.

Thanks!

It was a Wednesday. I got to the Rails to Trails part early enough to see a couple of roadie/trigeeks finishing their early A.M. workouts. But no matter on all of the other roads - weekend or weekday - not many cyclists play on those highways. And I don't blame them. Just north of my route through all of those little country towns (video Part 2) are countless farm to market roads that are pretty, untraveled, and go nowhere, making loops of any size from 10 to 200 miles possible.

Also, the Tammany Trace Rails to Trails corridor is now well over 30 miles one way! If I lived near that thing I would never ride the death roads either.

Very cool, thanks for sharing.
The trip across that bridge was scary but will let me cross a bridge here that is so narrow but I so want to cross it to get to sweet rides across the waters as well as a visit to my mom.

This might be the best post I have seen here but that is just my opinion.

If you can get on the bridge early A.M. that is usually your best bet, especially on a Sunday. If I had crossed the 5 mile bridge on a weekend morning I probably would not have seen five cars. Flatting would not be fun on a narrow bridge. That's the largest risk I think.

I am glad you and others liked the vids. I wasn't sure about the response from posting my "vacation" videos in an open forum. Thanks!

You pedaled out of NOLA to escape Katrina? Tell us more!

No. But I know people who did and made it to Baton Rouge about 80 miles north in 6 hours on their bikes when it took 15 hours by car!

There's a story I'd like to hear. JoeyBike, I'm watching Video 1 right now, and discovering that you have a lot more videos available, too. Amazing. On the I-10 bridge, are you riding right on the white line? Because I'm guessing that is not a bike lane to the right of the line, is it.

The evacuation to Baton Rouge is a short story. It takes 6 hours by bike on a normal day. I have done that at least 20 times. Auto traffic jams do not impede bicycles generally. Some of my acquaintances even biked on I-10 but most took Highway 61. Backpack or panniers full of whatever they could carry. Pretty simple. The weather before a hurricane hits is generally beautiful for a few days. No one that I know waited for the hurricane to flood the city to escape. Not THAT would be a good story, but very easy to do on a bike light enough to carry over debris.

I seem to have 80+ videos on line right now. It usually takes me about 2 hours to edit each one, sometimes much less. At least the wife knows where I am.

I never actually biked on I-10, although there was a typo (now fixed) on the second video that had me on the shoulder of I-10 when actually it was I-55.

On video Part 1, I biked over I-10, then onto the Highway 11 "Death Bridge". In Part 3, at the very end, I run a bunch of red lights as I bike UNDER I-10. So I did cross I-10 twice.

If you still care, tell me the title of the video and the time stamp of the exact video position (you may have to hover the cursor over the bottom of the video window to see the status bar) and I will be happy to answer any questions.

Cheers!
