New Year's resolutions start today

I went to the GP yesterday. My blood pressure and blood sugar are too high, my triglycerides and weight are too high, and the mileage in my logbook is too low. The New Years resolutions start today. Time to take off the 20 pounds that have crept back since my cycling peak in 2007. I don't want to stick my finger with a needle twice a day. Fish oil and niacin I'll take, but BP medicine will wait. I don't know about the glass of wine in the evening - good for the heart but a bunch of calories and bad for the sugar.

It's time to stop having fun, or, I should say, it's time to start having a different fun. Who's with me?

Sounds like Dec 3 is a better day for resolutions. I'm sure you'll find takers for threads on the subject.

Fish oil and niacin were both a complete waste of money for me. No results whatsoever, except for hot flashes from the niacin. I hope they work better for you.

Well, sure, I could cut an easy 100 calories out of my diet were I to give up my one glass of wine with dinner each night but why would I want to do that?

Why did you post this- It's about time I went to the docs to get a few things sorted out but just don't get round to it. Cycling is when I and the weather will permit me at present. Rain promised again this weekend so it will have to be on with the Gum Boots and get out in the garden.

But as soon as I can get riding again- no need for the quacks

But on the wine-100calories a glass???? Drink a glass of dry red and it will not have much sugar in it. Drink 3 and you won't care.

And I'm with you- as soon as the rain and or wind let up. Still warm over here but still getting a couple of inches of rain a day and 25mph winds. I can ride in the wet- the cold or with wind- but not two at a time.

Yep, 100 calories a glass. It's not the sugar, it's the alcohol (which I believe is a sugar, itself)

At 100 calories a glass- I wonder how it would do as an Energy Supplement on a ride?

Stapfam Better to start now than tomorrow.

After I got out of college I gained weight and stopped exercising. At age 44 I had a heart attack which was my wakeup call. I had a hard time keeping up an exercise regime until I worked it into my daily life. I now ride my bike every day (I commute to/from work, and don't have a car). By getting rid of the car I am forced to ride a lot more. Today I am 40lbs lighter than I was when I had my wakeup call. I refuse to give up wine though - at 15mph you burn 34 calories per mile so I earn my glass of wine on my way home!

The fish oil and niacin are working well for me, but it takes 2,000 mg a day of the niacin to do the job. BP, even after being on it for a while, I still have to take a single aspirin with the niacin to keep the flushing from getting out of hand.

It's mainly the weight I need to work on next year. I've managed to keep an extra 10+ pounds on this entire year. Not good.

Booze = Energy supplement?
Back in the late 1930s when I was a kid growing up in Belgium, the racers energy drink was : fill your bidon (water bottle) with beer and 2 raw eggs. Shake well. Salut!

We are all on board with you. The quality of tomorrow depends on the commitments of the next minute. Even when its boring and the taste buds demand a thrill ride. We all gotta get better.

If you really want to get rid of the weight and get back to healthy statistics I suggest Weight Watchers Online. It worked for me and RR. I dropped 30 lbs five years ago, held that weight for awhile then decided to drop 15 more this year. I keep it off, have my wine in the evening and my blood chemistry, blood pressure and heart rate are wonderful. The recipes are fun and tasty and it helps you take control of your eating. All you have to do is log your intake. If you don't log everything then eventually it will catch up with you. I think the best thing is that it has steered me to eating the right things and if I want to eat the "bad stuff" I do it withing reason and have no guilty feelings. Tonight is our company Christmas party and I fully intend to eat well. Tomorrow ride 40 or 50 plus miles and eat right again.

I started my New Year's resolution on November 8. After seeing a Dr Oz show, decided to do a 28 day vegan diet. Lost 11.5 lbs. Last winter I gained 15 lbs. This year, biked over 2,000 miles, didn't loose a pound. Just didn't want to repeat the 15 pound gain again this summer.
Saturday was the last day of the 28 day diet, but it's gone so well, I'm going to try a bit longer.

My Resolution came after my yearly physical this summer. I was haveing a lot of knee pain at work and such , was going to ask the Dr. about it. While waiting for him to arrive I realized I have been gaining way too much weight from the pre exam the nurse gave. Anyway I went home resolved to loose weight and with the help of bicycling, no more sugar and late night junk food I lost 20 lbs. in 3 mos.. The knee pain subsided and the miles go by way faster and with a lot more fun. Good Luck and Health to you all !!!!!
