A Bicycle without a Seat :50:

A new California law passed regarding bicycles without seats. It’s now legal to ride a bike without a seat in California, if that bike was designed to not have a seat. Don’t know how many bikes there are without seats. Below is the Fastboy assless from last year, read NO slouching !

Natural progression from the teens riding BMX standing up.

Provides another option for braking....

I read a story about a cyclist who had broken his seat post on a ride and decided to not replace it. From that point on he rode without a seat. The kicker is he rode centuries.

I had to do half my commute (7 miles) standing up once and I thought my legs would fall off.

Wouldn't be my first choice for a "ride your age" ride.

The reason the law was repealed was the emergence of standup, running-motion bicycles, such as the ellipticycle, which were illegal under the old California law. I have seen one of the inventors riding his near my home.

Not sure but I would think it to good for trials riding?
Not sure I would unless I had a rear fender on it.

And this was bad, somehow?

Hmm, curious to me, as a European with a Californian spouse and domicile

That there are so many laws!

Cali-spouse, as a keen skier, notices this even more. Europe -'Its dangerous. You know that. Don't crash, no-one's coming!'

I mean, bike saddles? Who was policed for that as a 5 year old?

'De minimis lex non curat', eh?

Basically for stunts of all kinds, especially slow speed ones where you need to throw your body in all directions and a seat gets in the way. There's a kid who plays on a similar seatless bike near where I work; he launches himself and bike up onto obstacles nearly a meter high from almost a standing start. Not my kind of riding, but I admire his skill.

It's good for when your pants only come up to your thighs.

I feel your pain, bro. I've decided to start doing some of my sprints around the park standing because I am so bad at it. Since I have no hills, I crank into a high gear, stand up, and then collapse after 100 yards.

Pardon the thread bump, but it's interesting that I found this thread in the 50+ forum. I was searching to see if riding bikes without seats was a "thing" after seeing a 50+ commuter-looking rider on a seatless bicycle--twice. The first time I saw him, I assumed the poor guy had his saddle stolen that day and was riding home. Then I saw him again last night, same route, same old bike with no seatpost or saddle.

Who does this?
