My Dumbest Ride

I had one of those rides today that I hope not to have again for a long time. Knowing I was going riding this morning, I had a light breakfast after my normal coffee and newspaper. Then I got involved with some work and several more cups of coffee. Skipped the morning routine that includes acid reflux medicine and suddenly decided that if I didn't jump on the bike at 1:00, I would miss my ride. So, jumped on my bike for a new ride over the hills on an empty stomach that was already feeling a little upset. By the time I crested Santa Susana Pass, all I could think about was food. A short time later I gobbled down an omelet with hash browns, toast and two big glasses of water. The return trip was just the opposite feeling with me wanting to get rid of food at every chance. On top of my physical distress, the last few miles to my home were at grades of 6 - 11% into a VERY strong headwind. I know tailwinds make us fast and headwinds make us strong, but all I wanted to do was get home.

I think next time I will pay a little attention to proper nutrition both before and during the ride.

Eating the wrong breakfast before a long ride always causes bad heartburn for me. You don't mention how far the ride was, but you're right - proper eating is very important.

Now you know why PIE rides are part of this forum.

Just in case there is ever the situation where I will not eat before a ride- or not be able to eat in the first hour of a ride-I always keep a gel inside the wedge.

You are lucky you made it home after the Omelette.

I know that eating an Omlette before headinh out on the bike will absolutely, positively have me searching out some bushes on the side of the road.

Don't forget to take some power bars along the next time. Lots of energy w/o the bloating.
