Just got back from riding Hellweek for the second year in a row. Ride takes place in Fredericksburg TX around the second to third weekends of March and you can ride for 8 days. Each day the rides begin and end at the same place in town and there are 3 rides to choose from each day, generally from around 45-55 to 60-75 and 90 to100+ miles. This is a great ride for anyone over 50 because of the good paved roads, scenery and the temperature is nice/great.
I would advise anyone to go to the Visitor Center in town and get the county road maps for the area to keep with you on the ride. You can use these maps to get a better idea of the route you'll be riding on, or you can use it to change up the actual ride to something more suitable to you.
Fredericksburg is a very nice smaller town in the Hill Country of Texas with plenty of shopping, eatery's, winery's and vineyards to visit. Check it out at hellweek.com, then see Texas hellweek. A great get away for anyone in the Northern US!

I did a one-week bike tour once in and around Texas Hill Country. Great place to ride a bike.

We live north of there in what is called the northern Hill Country (shhhhh! it's a secret) but go to Fredericksburg often. In fact, tonight we're debating taking the tandem on Saturday for the LBJ 100. And my wife loves the Scotch eggs at the brewery in town.



Visitor center is very helpful, but as a native Texican....the very best map you will find is an atlas called Backroads of Texas. Make some 11 x 17's and go ride.

I have all of these printed and in a 3 ring binder. IMHO these are the BEST resources for going to the 'Burg. But take either a county map or something from Backroads and then you can make your own short cuts. Take a compass of some sort if it's overcast. Texas isn't as flat as some folks think.

I met 3 guys and one gal from the Seattle area while there last week, all very nice people and hard riders, and they're coming back next year.
