1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?

I have several: Land Shark, Tommasini, Trek 520, Easy Racer Gold Rush

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?

Don't fall for the hype. Just food. You want a good energy drink? Drink milk.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?

Only my wife can comment on that.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?

Out of near 55 years, hmmm. I started riding at four. Did two solo rides across the US, '72 and '76. A few state rides and RAGBRAI 15 times.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.

Short, long, touring and commuting.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?

Over the years, 2500 to 5000ish miles per year.

7. Weight resistance training is the best supplement you can use to compliment cycling. Whether your own weight or steel.

Age 51

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?
- Specialized Allez that I've upgraded to the point that only the original aluminum frame is left; has Ultegra components, FSA carbon cranks, carbon bars, selle SLK saddle, etc.

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?
- Just Alleve before I ride.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?
- About 15 years ago I rode for a year or so and stopped . . . picked it back up and feel like I'm almost as fast now as I was then.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?
- About a year on my "second time around."

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides, commute, tour, race?
- Rec rides; anywhere from 10-50 miles on average; have riden a century and a couple of 70+ milers. Don't race.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?
- During good weather, 3-5 times a week; have ridden about 3,300 miles this year so far.

7. Do you do any other type of physical activities - weight lifting, skiing, running, etc.?
- Run some during the winter due to less daylight; also play softball and golf in the summer.

Please tell us your age. 53

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride? A Mongoose Hybrid that I bought in the mid 90's. About 3 months ago I bought a Gunner built by an employee about 6 months prior. Made me an offer I couldn't refuse.

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?
None at all.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?
Since I started riding again, I feel I'm improving. Last Easter I was about to go up one pant size. 6 1/2 months later I'm 3 notches down on the belt. I owe most of it to biking, although I haven't given up my wine in the evening and I stiff arm fast food places.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?
I rode off and on 10 years ago. 6 months ago I started with a little more enthusiasm. With the recent success I find myself at LBS more often than I need to be and want to increase my toy collection.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides, commute, tour, race?
At this point I would say medium to long rides. I have only done one sponsered ride of 55 miles and would like to do more of the same when we get past winter (for what winter is here).

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?
Started 6 times a week at 60 to 70 miles per week. Currently I ride 5 times a week for 120 to 140 miles. I have logged 3100 miles in the 6 1/2 months.

7. Do you do any other type of physical activities - weight lifting, skiing, running, etc.?
I should, but don't. Maybe if a gym would serve pie I could get motivated.

feeling frisky @ 56

I am a 56 year old female cyclist. I actually just sold my car and am going car-free. I've been riding for about 25 years, mostly recreational.

I have several bikes to choose from..an old vintage Cannondale, a zippy little Italian road bike, a fendered fat tire commuter and the back half of a Santana tandem.

I've had some big milage years and some sparse years depending on what other hobbies I've gotten myself into. Now that I am carless I am seeing my milage and firness level really take a jump.

I am a nutritionist by profession and beleive that a standard multi-vitamin should be adequate if you are eating a healthy diet.

I also do some basic weight training to offset bone loss. I used to run but my knees are telling me it is time to stop. I love to cross country ski when we get snow....we usually have to go north or over to West Virginia for that.

But at any rate I feel that I can continue to cyle at a decent pace and distance for the rest of my life. One of my "older" cycling friends just turned 80 and he can ride rings around folks half his age.

I'm 55.

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?
I started with a comfort bike, then a hyrdid (which I still have, a cannodale) and then wanted a road bike, but my back doesn't really allow for it. So I got a Lemond Wayzata, which is a road bike with flat handlebars, and this summer, I got an INdependent Fabrication built that's much like the Le Mond.

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?
I take glucosomine, which may or may not actually do anything, and a daily vitimin that I don't really belive in. But it makes my doctor happy.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?
In most ways, except when it comes to riding, I'm more active than I've been at many things in my life.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?
Although I've ridden at various other times in my life, for all practical purpsoes I took it up seven years ago. And have gone over 31,000 miles since.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides, commute, tour, race?
I commute, as much as possible, and go on short to medium length rides, 20 to 40 miles, generally.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?
I put on about 4500 miles a year, despite each year, lately, missing some large chunks of time for various health and professional reasons. I try to ride every day, which I don't do, but I do ride more days than I don't.

7. Do you do any other type of physical activities - weight lifting, skiing, running, etc.?

Not really. Weirdly, I have a lot of back and knee problems that prevent some things, but generally don't interfer with riding a bike.

My riding habits!

I am a 6ft 3",300lb 50 year old with disabilities. I ride everyday to the store, across town to visit or eat maybe . 1600 miles so far in about 9-10 months.

I ride a Giant FCR4

Haven't slowed any. If anything I'm still going like a 35 year old.

I don't take any supplements.

I ride mostly around town. A 15 miler or so once in awhile.

Have been biking since 2003 since I learned that I could still stay upright on one. Am partially paralyzed on right side with less than normal balance.

Some questions:

Please tell us your age. 61

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?
Giant 2005 OCR 2 composite
Giant 2005 Trance 2 MTB
I still have my first RB a 1972 Peugeot

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?
Tried to a couple of years back but they made me feel tired and worn out so no I take nothing.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?
Yes quite a bit since my early athletic years, I first notice a slowdown when I hit 30 and then again at 40 when I quit my almost daily workout in Tae kwon do. Took up biking again a little over a year ago. Right now I feel as though I haven’t slowed down in the last 20 years.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?
I biked of course as a kid then bought my first RB at age 26 and rode it for about 15 years then started again in 2005.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides, commute, tour, race?
I usually ride every Saturday and Sunday morning about 20 miles, I try to take off early at least one day during the week and get into the hills behind my house on the MTB

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?
Two to three times a week unless it’s raining. Mileage this last years was about 1000 miles.

7. Do you do any other type of physical activities - weight lifting, skiing, running, etc.?
I try to life weights a couple of times a week at the local 24 hour fitness

My riding habits

I have been riding 15 years and more frequently since I retired in 1996. I am 68 and nearly 69 years old and biking is my main form of exercise, getting out and around, and simply enjoying the scenery go by.
I have had a mountain bike since 1991 and am on my fourth one, each being better than the last. I now ride a Klein Palomino Race I have had for three years and it has 7200 miles on the odometer. In 2005 I baught my first road bike, a Klein Aura VX, and I now ride it when ever I am on pavement. I still enjoy moutain biking which I do mostly in the summer in the LAke Tahoe area.

My riding routinely is from my garage to a paved trail which runs 50+ miles through our San Ramon Valley connecting the cities north to Martinez and south to Pleasanton. It is flat, off the street and used by joggers, walkers, roller bladders and others such as the local high school cross country team. I am most happy to share the trail. About half of my rides are on roads and streets which have bike lanes where I feel most comfortable. The streets and roads allow me variety and some minor hills for a litlle more exercise. I have ridden up Mt. Diablo a few times, but it is a real chore for me to rise 2400 feet in seven miles. It is great fun coming down however hitting the switch backs at 25+ MPH. My typical road bike ride
is 25-30 miles and I do this about 15 times a month, ( more in the summer, less in the winter). All together I ride 4000 miles a year.

I haven't experienced too much "slow down" as I was never very strong or fast. I have realized how much better I can ride having lost 20-30 pounds since 2004. I don't any special vitamins or supplements. I don't work out and the only part of me that is in pretty good is from the waist down.

I've been a member for a couple years and read quite often but have never posted. I thought it was about time to join in some of the discussions

Some questions:

Please tell us your age.

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?

I ride a Trek Madone 5.0 WSD. I also own a Trek 1800C that I rode for three years and now use it for a backup bike and winter riding.

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?

On doctor's orders I take a multi-vitamin and extra calcium.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?

I started cycling about 5 years ago and so far I've only seen improvement each year. I'm sure I'll begin to see some slowing down soon.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?

I've always owned a bike but only started riding on a regular basis in the last 5 years.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides, commute, tour, race?
I do a lot of riding with the local cycling club. Most rides are 20-50 miles. I did my first century last summer

I'm also a volunteer bike patrolman for the local parks and do quite a bit of trail riding. We have a biking program for beginners in the summer that consists of a 10-20 mile ride on the trails each Saturday morning.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?
I usually bike 4-5 days a week in the summer and 2-3 in the winter - weather permitting. SW Ohio winters are very unpredictable. So far it's been a rather warm winter. I rode 2,400 miles this year.

7. Do you do any other type of physical activities - weight lifting, skiing, running, etc.?
I lift weights and walk/run on my treadmill. I was diagnosed with osteoporosis a few years ago and the weight training is important.

Perhaps you might indicate your age on your reply??

I'll be 64 in January.

questions

Please tell us your age.

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?
I RIDE A 2001 TREK - A WOMANS 2200 WITH 650 WHEELS. IT IS THE BEST BIKE I HAVE EVER RIDDEN. IT IS A 27 SPEED BRIGHT YELLOW WITH ROYAL BLUE. I HAVE CRUISE BARS FOR IT.

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?
I TAKE VITAMIN E-1000-CLA 1000-MAGNESIUM-POTTASIUM- CALCIUM 1000-AND A HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE PILL. YIKES! THAT CAME AFTER MY DIVORCE AND THE EXTRA POUNDS I LIKE TO IGNOR-I PREFER TO THINK IT IS MUSCEL.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?
I HAVE SLOWED DOWN AS FAR AS BOUNCING BACK IS CONCERNED. OR UNTIL I RIDE WITH THE BIG GIRLS THEN I COME IN LAST AND I KNOW I AM MUCH OLDER THAN MY CROWD OR WEAKER IN SOME CASES.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?
BIKED MANY YEARS

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides, commute, tour, race?
I LIKE LONG RIDES IF I AM WITH SOMEONE ELSE WHO LIKES TO RIDE. I JUST DID A TOUR WITH THE GREATER ARIZONA BICYCLE ASSOCIATION IN AZ. A GREAT TOUR FROM THE GRAND CANYON TO TUCSON. AND A GREAT STAFF OF PEOPLE.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?
IN WARMER WEATHER I BIKE EVERY DAY FOR 20-30 MILES BUT I DO NOT ENJOY MI IN THE WINTER TIME SO I WORK OUT EVERY OTHER DAY AT THE GYM. FIRST DAY CARDIO AND SECOND TIME WORK OUT ROOM. SOMETIMES I WORK OUT FOR AN HOUR AND OTHER TIMES A HALF HOUR. IF I COULD AFFORD A TRAINER I MIGHT HAVE ONE OF THEM HELP ME. BUT I DO A SPINNING CLASS WITH WEIGHTS AND THAT IS GOOD ALSO.

7. Do you do any other type of physical activities - weight lifting, skiing, running, etc.?
WEIGHT LIFTING, CROSS COUNTRY SKIING, DANCING, HIKING/WALKING TWO MILES THREE TIMES A WEEK.

I WILL BE 67 IN APRIL AND "I AM SINGLE".

How did I miss this forum?

Please tell us your age. Just turned 54 Christmas Eve

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride? I had a Cannondale hybrid, which didn't fit me. My son works in a bike shop and races and is obsessed. In the last year I have purchased a Trek hybrid and now a gorgeous Project One Pilot (I'm in it for the colors but apparently the components are nice also).

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older? Just a vitamin

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any? I was never fast so no difference other than I think I might have been able to go faster with trying at it when I was younger. I have also gotten myself a shoulder issue which I didn't have when I was much younger.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life? Depends on the definition. Of course I've been on a bike since my father taught me to ride when I was 5 or 6. A bike was the only way to get around when young. I rode off and on in my 20's, rode in my 30's, carried my kids behind me, rode when I lived in Germany, didn't ride for awhile while into horses, and now have started again. Have never ridden seriously, only for enjoyment. Now is the most serious I've ever been about trying to get fit from riding (influence of my son). I also now want to ride with a club and have started doing weekend rides here and there.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides, commute, tour, race? At the moment little training rides to try and get myself fast enough to ride with a club and to not be exhausted on weekend rides.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage? Not often enough

7. Do you do any other type of physical activities - weight lifting, skiing, running, etc.? Now go to the gym and do the machines. Pilates and yoga also and am about to go skiing for the first time in 20 some years!

I am 55 and hail from Auckland, New Zealand. I have ridden the same Giant prodigy for the last 15 years or so, replacing and updating as bits wore out. Yes, I have slowed down...it just takes more effort to get out there and keep the exercise levels up. I have cycled on and off most of my life and do not take supplements...I am a vegetarian though. I cycle tour mostly...local and overseas in Europe. I can still, on occasion, manage 140 kilometres a day with panniers over varying terrain...albeit, a bit slowly. Thanks for all the comments everyone...you are inspiring!

Hello! This is my first post to BF. Great questions, so . . . .

I am 51 years old and got back into cycling about four years ago.

1. My rides are:
2004 LeMond Buenos Aires
2003 Specialized Sirrus (commuter/hybrid)--thinking of switching over to a Jamis Coda for the smoother ride on a steel frame
2005 Gary Fisher Hoo Koo E Koo (Mtn.)
1970s Schwinn Continental (bought at a Good Will for nostalia's sake for $3.99 and that I'm [slooowly] restoring)

2. I take a multivitamin, Vitamin E (heart), Gingko Biloba (for memory--when I remember to take it ), Glucosamine, and the occasional Ibuprofen for aches.

3. I've slowed down quite a bit but it doesn't bother me. I've gotten old enough to know that when I try to accomplish things by hitting the grand slam home run I tend to strike out, so I'm an incrementalist, chipping away until I get to where I want to be. That includes my training and conditioning. Even so, I am a high school teacher and I KNOW I am in better condition than about 70% of my students.

4. I biked A LOT when I was a teenager. Grew up in western Oregon, so had plenty of riding time in the rain. I didn't ride for about 20 years because I was living overseas, in a country where I would have gotten smacked by a kamikaze truck or car if I'd tried to ride on the roads. After coming home, it felt great to get into cycling again.

5. I ride to work two or three days a week (16 miles r.t.). I'm mainly a roadie and ride 25-65 miles at a time. I love hill climbing, and tend to pass people on hills, then I tend to *get passed* on downhills. Go figure. I like races, start my season at the beginning of April with the Wenatchee Duathlon and finish up in October with the Manastash metric century. I did my first triathlon last summer and that was a blast. Even got third in my age group, so that was a hoot!

6. Don't really keep track. In the winter, with ice on the ground, I do the spinning classes at the local Y. I get out at least three times a week, no matter what the weather (using my mtn. bike to commute when there's snow on the ground). Probably do about 2500 miles/yr. plus whatever I log on my casual, smell-the-roses, feel-good rides.

7. I ski, do weight training for core strength (just intensifying that now after the holidays), I run, although I'm not fast (nine-minute miles) and last year I got back into swimming to train for that triathlon I did, and that's been a lot of fun. I also just like going out for a good walk, time to time. I have kids, so the physical activities I do serve as an example to their own activities. And I'm interested in nutrition-exercise, so study a lot about that, but that doesn't strictly qualify as a physical activity!

That's it from me. Have a great riding year, everyone!

Brad

Please tell us your age.

53.

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?

RANS Dynamic
RANS Cruz
RANS Fusion

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?

Centrum Silver

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?

Yep, some. From a series of accidents, falls, etc. I have arthritis in my spine and bone spurs in my neck. I’m also carrying some extra poundage (See Clydesdale forum) that I’d like to drop.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?

All my life – on and off. Picked up again seriously in 2001 thru 2003 when an )yet another) accident took the wind out of my sails. I started again in May 2006. Did the Seagull Century metric (70 miles) in October.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides, commute, tour, race?

Mostly rec rides I guess – 30 miles or less. I bought a trainer for me for Christmas - I try to do that 6 days a week.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?

Hard to say as I’m just getting back into it and my work schedule this past year was horrendous – but I guess I did around 1K in 2006.

7. Do you do any other type of physical activities - weight lifting, skiing, running, etc.?

I’m lazy and hard to motivate to physical activity – but I try to walk when time allows.
