MTB rims

I am in the process of restoring my MTB and have in mind to actually use it from time. Fire roads, trails around where I live.

I mostly use my CX bike but spend a lot of time walking on some of them.

One of the things I need to do is build a new rear wheel.

Nothing fancy, strong and serviceable.

What is the MTB world's equivalent to the Open Pro??

Assuming some of the folks here know about MTB's and the like.

TIA.

I bought a mashed Rockhopper to get the sorta straight wheels so my Stumpie sometimes commuter could still have a choice between slicks when playing sissy commuter or meat grinder manly knobbies for dirt use.

There is a standard that I do not like going below and that is a Shimano LX hub- 36 spokes and a Mavic rim.

I use XT hubs and a Mavic rim to suit the Usage and whether it is rim or Disc brakes. This type of wheel is readily available at most wheelbuilders at at "Economic" price and is strong enough for most riders.

Probably either Mavic 717 or DT Swiss 400 (425 for rim brakes)

If you DON'T have disc brakes, some of the deals out there are incredible. I've picked up two sets of Mavic wheels and another front wheel and spare rim. I paid no more than $32 for any of the sets. The best Mavic rim if you can find it, is a Mavic 517. They are darn near bullet proof. Some of the better MTBr's remount these rims to disc hubs because they are so strong. FOr the type of riding you're doing, any Mavic should fill your needs. My advice, if you don't have discs is to troll CL and Ebay for wheelsets until you find a good deal.

I believe that the 517's are one of the best all around MTB rims available based on weight/performance/price. Coupled with a Shimano LX or better hub, they make a wheel that is the equivalent of the Shimano/Open pro. If you are building disc wheels, then a step up to the 717 disc rim will also make a good performance wheel.

If you want indestructable wheels, Rhinolytes are very strong.........at a significant weight penalty. Sometimes they are used to build downhill wheelsets.
